More TWS action

December 31, 2008

This time it’s a lengthy interview with Canada’s first ever professional skateboarder, Kevin Harris, and Chris Haslam, conducted at the legendary Oceanside Pier by the one and only Sean Mortimer. It looks at the parallels in their careers and is a super interesting read. In 3 parts because it’s so long, here’s PART ONE and PART TWO…

Christmas Giving.

December 29, 2008

Now this year me was not really a typical Christmas..why? Well, if you read my last post I went to White Spot with just my Dad; usually my family does it up with friends with a nice cooked meal. What also changes this year is that my Dad and I handed out wrapped gifts that we purchased (actually Dad did) from Army and Navy. We have handed out clothing before, but this time the clothes were not used, which made it better especially for the people getting a present on Christmas day. The faces I saw that day made me feel..well really good inside – I mean big smiles and just you could see the warm thank you’s in the peoples faces after they received a package or just a pair of wrapped gloves.

Basically, we drove up through the Granville street alley ways, and then made it through Hastings; that was our last place to hand out gifts, since we just did not want to give out present to addicts/drug dealers. We had packages that consisted of gloves, socks, and a sweater – also categorized it in different sizes for different shapes.
I felt really good for going out this year, and hope I can make a routine for every Christmas to come. Just helping out a few people makes a difference, does not take that much either to grab a few gifts – even for gloves. Each year I come to a realization that it does not matter getting gifts.. I’d rather be able to give something, and see someone’s face glow than get a million gifts.

A White Spot X-mas

December 29, 2008

Alright, so I have been due for a post in a little bit and decided that this would be worthy post for many of you (if you didn’t know already). Basically, this post is for those who are maddd lazy cooking meals on Christmas day or well just don’t know how to cook a decent bird.

Anyway my Dad was planing on not cooking a bird this year, since no one was going to be coming over and we were trying to decide on a decent priced place to eat that is open on Christmas. Then my Dad mentioned White Spot has a mean dinner there on Christmas day – why not then? Now at first I did not expect much from the menu; well because White Spot is mainly known for their “triple O” burgers – I was quite impressed though after reading the menu through. As much as I was tempted in getting a hot turkey sandwich; I had to order the meal I was there initially there for; The Turkey Meal: ” I’ll take the spot please “.

So, from the picture you can see the meal is very nicely prepared (especially for a turkey meal coming out to 15 bucks). You get your greens, with your side of cranberry sauce – where I never use.. don’t quite get why it is there; tastes crappy to me.. As I was listing, you get a nice share of mashed potatoes; can’t forget about the stuffing too! Then with a fair amount of the tasty bird that everyone waits for on Christmas – topped with a nice thick batch of gravy – ” Can I get a Side of Gravy please & thank you “.

Overall quite a dope meal I can say, especially coming from white spot – definitely keeping this one in mind for future Christmas to come. Whoever did not know about this – go for it if you are not down for cooking a turkey – I guarantee you will not be disappointed on your meal.

early morning hype.

December 28, 2008

i went to the livesale. i’ve been to other livesales but for some reason this was quite an adventure. + even just standing in line with my homies was pretty fun. i did in fact freeze my balls off because just as i got there it began to snow.

i don’t think this kind of early morning line up type stuff is for everybody. i actually find it in a sick and masochistic way to be fun. i mean so long as you have a few close friends to chill with you(no pun intended) it’s good times.

Colin Mckay TWS cover

December 28, 2008

I think the last time we saw Colin Mckay on the front of Transworld Skateboarding might have been back in the 90’s with one of the most memorable covers of the era. Correct me if I’m wrong (about the trick and about it being his last TWS cover) but I believe he was doing a switch crooked grind on a ledge at hot spot with a burning building in the background.

This month’s issue of TWS features Colin airing over a relatively unskateable brick obstacle in Germany. No burning structures in the shot, but epic nonetheless.

please give…

December 28, 2008

I love fruitcake.  So much that I’ve set up a rescue program via craigslist.  Too often after Christmas, these cakes are unnecessarily thrown out.  I don’t talk about it much, but I’m actually half white, and Christmas cake is a big part of my heritage.  I recognize the fact that I am one of the few people under the age of 48 that enjoys fruitcake so I feel it’s my duty to carry the fruitcake onto future generations.

AntiSocial is Moving!

December 27, 2008

since 2002, Antisocial skateboard shop has lived down by the corner of main and broadway and has been the raddest (in my opinion) skateboard shop in all of the city. they have an art gallery AND a mini ramp in the back of the shop and it is such an awesome place to be, no matter the time o’ day. the shop is run by michelle pezel and rick mccrank and they have done an amazing job of supporting skateboarding in vancouver for many many years, but now they gotta close up the store and move. come down to the store at 2425 main street and help them move/buy some super cheap awesome stuff (they have a large and in charge sale going on). they are open at their current location untill the 30th, so head down and shred the miniramp in this snowy world one last time! www.antisocialshop.com has more infoooo

here’s a video of the miniramp

turkey tales vol. 1……

December 27, 2008

Like a lot of families in Vancouver, we’ve got a couple different cultures going on, so Christmas is always fun.

Unbeknownst to me, my sister in law takes photos of me carving the turkey every year to post on her MIXI page to show her friends in Japan…  Now that I know this I’m going to dress up like a lumberjack and pose w. an axe next to the bird.  But why take such a picture?  Well, in Japan on Christmas it’s common for families to dine on KFC of all things.  I know… I’ve always felt KFC has insulted my intelligence, first by changing from Kentucky Fried Chicken to KFC… and lately the chicken bowl?   Come on….Well…I have to hand it to them…they conned the entire country of Japan into thinking that what you are suppose to do on Christmas is eat their product….I know…a nation that invented the Walkman…Nintendo….I know what they’ve done for streetwear…..they’re all getting duped…

She also told me tons of Japanese kids are good all year but don’t get any presents on Christmas…

No presents….KFC…..this is starting to sound like a Dave Chapelle sketch….

City Under Snow-Siege

December 26, 2008

Inspired by Bob K’s post, here’s a couple arctic Mount Pleasant photos I shot on December 24th while bundled up for a mission to stockpile some Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. In the 10 years I’ve lived in Vancouver, I’ve never before seen this long of a cold snap or this much snow. Like many people, my flight plans for the holidays were cancelled, but it was sweet to spend a rare snowbanked Christmas in Van. Happy Holidays, all!

Merry Christmas!!!!

December 25, 2008

Hello…I am baby Santa Claus…I was originally owned by Jef Choy’s grandparents….they were wonderful owners.  I was only brought out only at Christmas time, and they protected me well from the sticky hands of their grandchildren.  Once they passed on however, I was inherited by Jef Choy.  Now I serve as a muse for Mr. Choy’s life of torment and silliness.

Now I am typically kept in places where Jef’s wife cannot reach me, but cannot avoid the sight of me.  She like a lot of the VIA readers also feels that I am ’scary’ or ‘creepy’.  I really don’t mind this, I admit, Santa Claus is intended to be large and jolly, I am neither of these things, so the uneasiness is understandable.  It’s people like Mr. Choy’s warped fascination with me that causes me the most pain in my life.  He also enjoys hiding me in places like closets, where I may surprise people.  Even stranger, from time to time he puts me in places where only he will eventually find me ie. his own closet!  His monologue after finding me is always truly pathetic…’Oh…Baby Santa Claus…how are you today?  How did you get in there?’  Of course this may seem harmless and quirky around the holiday season….but when he does it in the middle of June, it is truly perverse.  I know this…and I know this well…for I am…Baby Santa Claus!

Send us your snow photos!

December 25, 2008

Do you ever see your scooter buried in the snowbank, laugh to yourself “DAMN! I guess I’m not going into the office today!”, and then two days later wonder where your scooter even went?

Me too.

So we’ve already got a ton of submissions from you for our call for snow photos and we’ll post the gallery shortly after Christmas. There’s obviously more snow now, so we want more photos! CLICK HERE TO SEND US PHOTOS OF YOUR SNOWY ADVENTURES!
