Another freebee! I know there’s a lot of ping pong aficionados in this city, and who wouldn’t want to show up for battle sporting this fancy paddle carrier from Jack Spade of New York?

So, I’ve played ping pong in a lot of people’s garages in the past, I think it’s a fairly common place for a table tennis table to show up. The winner of this thing will be the person who sends in the best photo of a garage. Inside or out, there doesn’t even have to be a ping pong table in the photo, the subject is just “Vancouver garage”.

Send your photo of a garage to this e-mail address before this Monday, March 2nd. The winner can pick up the prize from our office after we announce the winning entry next week.

To give you an idea of how fancy this thing is, the only place in the city that sells Jack Spade is Holt Renfrew. HR didn’t supply this piece to us, but we’re trying to include local businesses in these giveaways in the future… so if you have a store, let us know if you want some exposure in exchange for a prize in one of our giveaways.

You may know Kurtis from his most recent video: “Strange Brew” What you may not know about Kurtis is that he’s a huge hockey fan.  While Vancouver is full of Canucks fans (I plan on talking to some in this column), there are a lot fewer hockey fans.  He’s the only guy I know I’ll see for sure at stuff like the World Jr’s or Giants games….other than a bunch of white people….

After watching the Canucks lose to Montreal, I thought I’d tap into the critical but impartial mind of Kurtis Philippone.

If the world was a game of football, Canada would be the kicker, and that’s one of the reasons why I think Lui is Canada’s greatest athlete.

Lui Passaglia has scored more points than anyone in the entire game of football. Not most points in a season, not most points on a team, the most points in the entire sport, American or Canadian. Always a class act, he has set countless records during his 25 year career with the B.C. Lions.

People always say that hockey is Canada’s game, but the truth is, they play it everywhere. They only play Canadian football in Canada, so I say Canadian football is Canada’s game, the Lions are our team, and Lui is our player.

On a completely selfish note, I’m going to point out where he was born and raised, yep, winner of VIA’s Hoodwar….Hastings-Sunrise!

The latest issue of Concrete Skateboarding should be on skate shop counters, coffee tables, and atop toilet tanks for bathroom reading by now. VIA’s Kelly Litz did a great job on the cover design (featuring ‘Couver’s Bradley Sheppard/Photo: Gordon Nicholas), and all the layouts throughout. My favourite piece to work on was the collab with Vancouver’s own Deer Man of Dark Woods from the Barrier Kult.
