The Dark X Virus

Some new works from The Dark and Virus at Library Square.
The Proof is a new feature where we ask creative people in Vancouver (who inspire me and the people around them) to share little glimpses into their day-to-day lives and their own inspirations - which we then present to you in a contact sheet/proof. First up is local DJ and photographer, and overall awesome person, Sincerely Hana.
We’re giving away 5 free passes to go see Mongrel Media‘s latest film, One Week, starring Joshua Jackson, at the Scotiabank Theatre on February 26th and March 5th.
The contest is over! Congrats to Flora, Matthew, Rob and Brock!

Rick McCrank is one of a precious few gifted skateboarders who, over the past couple of decades, have figured out ways to maintain careers as professional skaters in the California-centric skateboard industry while living in Vancouver. I assume these “ways” are mostly based on talent and style with a sprinkle of smart choices and more than a dash of work ethic, as Rick spends a lot of his time down south and abroad touring but manages to maintain a life, a daughter, a home, a motorcycle and a penchant for burritos in this beautiful city of ours. I am incredibly proud to call Rick McCrank a friend, and to bring this latest Most Awesome interview to you.

What makes this city so awesome?
The non-cityness of it.
What’s Kalea’s [Rick's daughter, the one perched on his shoulders above] favorite thing to do in the city?

Once upon a time I had the idea to make t-shirts that said: “Just because I snowboard, doesn’t mean I’m your friend.”…that was an all time low for me I think. Now I’m looking at this mysnowbuddy app on facebook and think it’s a great idea!
I’ve actually come to appreciate the useless idle banter that goes on while on a chairlift with complete strangers to the point where I’m now considering giving them rides. I don’t know what’s come over me….I think it’s karma for the t-shirt idea.

This is one of my new found running routes. Vancouver is one of the best places in the world if you run, you can pretty much run year round and the access to waterfront running is unmatched. On any sunny day in kits you can see tons of people running along Cornwall on the way to Spanish Banks. Wall street is the East Van version of this. It’s a pretty short jaunt but you can pair it up with running around New Brighton Park and the track at Empire Bowl. I wouldn’t run here at night but during the day it’s beautiful.

Huge respect goes to Kitchen Corner on The Drive for their commitment to the truth in advertising – this sign was specifically talking about their skim and boogy board selection. In case you can’t make it out, it says “Cool* Designs! *(according to taste.)” When I actually think about it, the sign is pretty profound. Nice job Kitchen Corner.

You guys were right…but you guys were wrong…..
OK, what’s the best donut at Tim Hortons? Any donut connoisseur knows it’s the honey crueller. I mean it’s not even fair, the honey crueller borders on fine pastry.
If you’re looking for a classic donut, Harmony’s kills it. The icing is bullet proof, the sprinkles are varied, these donuts the perfect balance of cakiness and crispiness. They have just a hint of grease that reminds you why they are so bad…but so good. The shop is a piece of work too, it’s the rumpus room you wish you still had, completely littered with kitschy memorabilia. Like check out that book….just what I needed…more Degrassi references….’You’re a very bad boy Derek!’ I know what you guys are saying…and in alot of ways you’ve proved your point….I can’t front.
Which is why…I’m now putting Honey’s in a different category, I’m not sure which one….it’s the platypus of pastries…..
Harmony is at 2945 Lonsdale in North Van.
