GO SEE CORALINE IN 3D!

February 20, 2009

So, I never followed up my Coraline post to let you know if the movie lived up to the hype that was generated around those shoes, did I?

In a nutshell: it f**king ruled. If I had one reservation going into it, it was that I thought the 3D-ness of it might come across as a little gimmicky (like that one Freddy Kreuger movie where the last ten minutes were 3D and they made a point of waving bats into the camera and stuff), but let me tell you that if you miss this movie in the theatre in 3D, you will be bummed. It’s so good, it’s almost as if it’s naturally occurring and you forget you even have the glasses on.

Here’s the schedule if you live anywhere in the lower mainland. Get there!

HAAAAR….OLLLLLD!

February 19, 2009

This is kind of a stretch for High Fiving Celebs… but I had to do it, cause it was really funny…

harold

When I was 7 or 8, Harold Snepsts came to Abbotsford to open the new Canadian Tire. I was so amped! I loved Harold, and when the day came to meet him, I rode my bike across town, almost 5kms… not even thinking about what I was wearing… who cared right? I sure as hell didn’t… I was a 7 yr old boy… It was amazing that I wasn’t wearing my pyjamas…

I lined up forever to meet Harold Snepsts, and when my turn came, you can see on my face that I was stoked… But then, the worst thing happened. Right after this pic was taken, Harold turned to me to say “thanks”, but instead spotted my jersey… Yes, that is an Edmonton Oiler jersey, not a Canuck jersey… I wasn’t even thinking! I actually hated the Oilers…

I heard him yell “Edmonton Oilers! You like the Oilers?”

I turned beet red… I couldn’t talk…

“You can’t have my picture if you’re wearing an Oiler jersey! What kind of kid…”

I made a break for it… ducking through plumbing and doubling back through electrical… all along hearing laughing as Harold searched around the store, looking for me and his autographed card…

I was terrified… he was laughing as he called for the ‘oiler… although I didn’t find out till later when my friends came out, that Harold was just joking… kind of…

This one goes out to Harold Snepsts, for making me check in the mirror from then on for what I looked like…

THE BEST LITTLE ANTIQUES STORE IN THE CITY WORLD

February 19, 2009

Near the Cambie, across from the Block on Cordova lies the most awesomest little antiques store ever. I brought a friend from out of town there yesterday and upon exiting he mentioned that the whole time we were inside he half expected to be sucked into some sort of storytale vortex and whisked away to some faroff land, like in the Never Ending Story or Narnia or something. It’s a magical place called Salmagundi West run by this charming lady named Lynn Brown who has no web site nor e-mail contact, and I’d be willing to bet you’ve walked past it more than once and never been inside perhaps because you don’t buy antiques… but it’s not simply filled with expensive shit from the past!

Let me take you inside…

The Brothers

February 19, 2009

I tripped over this old clip the other day and thought I should post it here.  Daver shot this one night I think early 2006.  It is crazy to think how far these brothers have gone already with their skating.  One has put out 4 or 5 video parts this year and had legit American ads with Plan B Skateboards (nollie b/s 180 nosegrind a handrail WTF?) while the other guy was the only person ever to win both Phoenix and Tampa Am Contests (the only am contests that matter) .

Here they show why they deserve to be where they are right now with a doubles attack on the kinker in West Van one dark evening of yester year.  Good luck in Cali dudes see you in the Summer

A Dude Named Boyd

February 18, 2009

boyd_brettboxphoto

Boyd Young may be an Aussie that doesn’t currently live in Vancouver—since he’d understandably rather roll in the Gold Coast’s sweltering summer heat—but he does truly love our city by the sea and will be back for the warmer season. His 11-month ‘Couver stint in ’08 was an eventful one; he quickly found a welcome home in the local skate community, and he became one serious fan of Andrew Pommier’s art. Look no further than right here for more.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE CANADIAN MINT

February 18, 2009

Dear Canadian Mint,

Please consider scrapping the queen beyond 2010 in favor of keeping Quatchi on the face of the 25 cent piece.

Thank you,
Bob K

quatchiquarter

PS: I will settle with Sumi or Miga, but would prefer to play video games and do my laundry with Quatchi.
