THEY ARE SO CLOSE I CAN SMELL THEM…

June 30, 2009

… almost literally!!! If you’ve been following you know I’m on the hunt for the urban chickens. I want to see photos of urban chicken coops and I want to hear stories about people who are urban chickening in Vancouver.

urbanchickenvancouver

As luck would have it our very own Cherchez (who brings you our ALMOST FAMOUS features) got ahold of a friend who has a friend who actually knows me and who I think is going to let me pop by their house to take photos of their coop! And – get this – this person lives 4 blocks from my house in wonderful Mount Pleasant. What better place to raise chickens than the ‘Plez?

Feature coming soon? We’ll see what happens…

NOTE: I think that this is a photo of a rooster, not a chicken. Maybe when I visit the urban coop they’ll set me straight and teach me all about the biology of these flightless winged beasts that we now share the city with.

Emerica Wild in the Streets Recap

June 30, 2009

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2ZidXbNMj0

Thank you to the almost 3,000 skateboarders that came through to Emerica’s first international Wild In The Streets in Vancouver, Canada. It was truly an epic day for skateboarding in our city as Emerica team riders Andrew Reynolds, Heath Kirchart, Ed Templeton, Kevin “Spanky” Long, Bryan Herman, Leo Romero, Jerry Hsu, Brandon Westgate, Jamie Tawncony took over the streets with Vancouver’s skateboarders. The mass ride throughout the city and events of the weekend was meant to raise awareness for skateboarding and for Lee Matasi, a local skateboarder who was murdered in 2005. Through donations, food, and t-shirt sales, $7000 was raised for the Lee Matasi Foundation and Leeside, the skateboard park built in his memory. We believe in the ability of skateboarders to empower themselves to do great things, and everyone stepped up.

Timebomb Trading Inc would like to thank the Emerica team, Michelle and Antisocial, Sole Technology, the Timebomb staff, NLA, Mayor Gregor Robertson and Sarah Blyth for declaring it Skateboard Week, the Vancouver Police Department for letting us do our thing and the police escort, Underworld, Color Magazine/SBC/Concrete for the coverage, Red Bull for the sound and hot dogs, all the media that helped push this event, Cyrus Thiedeke, Mike Mckinlay, everybody else that we missed. Thank you for supporting!

VANCOUVER’S MOST AWESOME: TERRY MCBRIDE!

June 30, 2009

One of the music industry’s most visionary figures is also one of Vancouver’s own. The co-founder and CEO of Nettwerk Records (famously founded in McBride’s Kits apartment in 1984) has managed some of the biggest artists in the world and also keeps a steady roster of the best Vancouver and Canada have to offer as well. With a big chunk of ideas on digital technology, intellectual property rights and the future of music distribution and a big fan of worldly & spiritual music and yoga, its no surprise that McBride also shares a deep love for his hometown.

Making The Mag, Part 2

June 30, 2009

concrete_push_pt2

Part 1 of the “Making The Mag” series on Push.ca/skateboarding shed some light on Concrete Skateboarding’s Issue 100 cover. MTM Part 2 is now online and looks at the issue itself: An insider’s inside look at the trials and tribulations of putting out a 20-year print retrospective, content intentions/summaries, and a brief run though the lengthy print history of this locally-based, free skate mag. You’ll find Part 2 here, and you’ll find #100 on newsstands and in skateshops across the land.

FIT FOR A KING 2

June 30, 2009

Yesterday I let you know about Prince Charles coming to town. A few weeks back you might remember that Prince Eddie was here and I said that if anybody could send me an ALMOST FAMOUS photo of themselves with him they would receive a TBD prize pack worth $100.

Our very own North Van correspondent, Trevor Clarke, answered the call… kinda. He sent this photo of Prince Eddie shaking the hand of somebody he knows receiving an award from him at some sort of ceremony.

princeddie

Not exactly the “Check it out, I’m chillin wit’ Prince Eddie!” photo I was expecting but, Trevor, I will give you something nice as a prize nonetheless.

2010 POSTERS

June 30, 2009

2010poster

One of the most collected things when it comes to Olympics (throughout history) is the posters. I’m still saving up for some of the original ones from Los Angeles 1984, today you can get a limited edition giclee print of the official Vancouver 2010 poster for only $150 (I don’t understand why or how it’s so cheap), or a regular print for $15.

The Proof – Frank Daniello

June 29, 2009

Our next featured local creative is our very own Skateboarding Editor and overall rad person, Frank Daniello. Frank moved to Vancouver from Winnipeg in 1998 and had his first written piece published in SBC Skateboard a few years later. He is now the associate editor at Concrete Skateboarding magazine, and also contributes as a writer to SBC Skateboard. He’s had work published in American magazines, Skateboarder and The Skateboard Mag, and also has a regular column on Push.ca. Here is a glimpse into Frank’s day-to-day life in and around Vancouver.
