All gud & runnin in Steveston: Gudrun

POSTED June 2, 2009 BY Boon Kondo

Richmond is one of the Chinese food capitals of the world but for those wanting a more downtowny type eatery vibe within city of Richmond limits, there’s a new joint in the heart of the Steveston village, right on Moncton street called GUDRUN. Patrick Tubajon, a former manager and longtime guy at the Alibi Room, made the trek back to his original hood on the south west corner of Richmond and opened up this joint in November 2008. I’m not much of a wine & cheeser but the combo of everything of this place gave me one of the fresher dining experiences I’ve had in a while……

Im told this place is like the Salt Tasting Room in Blood Alley and though Ive never been there, I have walked by and the vibe seems somewhat similar. The fact that this out in Steveston though just gives it another thing altogether. There’s been steady condo development along the southern coast of Steveston (along Moncton, across from the Steveston community and martial arts centres – waddup to the Steveston Judo Club!) and Im sure its pretty cool for the peoples that are living around there to be able to get a drink (without pearls) and some fresh eats right around the corner in the evening without making the trek to the downtown area.

There’s a huge beer & wine list (I had a Czech beer, my lady had something thats similar to a Risling wine from the Okanagan) and a simple but tasty menu of “a variety of fresh, locally produced meats, cheeses, salads and breads.”

Not surprisingly, this place won the Best New Suburb award in the Straight Golden Plates awards.
