The Proof – Frank Daniello

POSTED June 29, 2009 BY Jennilee

Our next featured local creative is our very own Skateboarding Editor and overall rad person, Frank Daniello. Frank moved to Vancouver from Winnipeg in 1998 and had his first written piece published in SBC Skateboard a few years later. He is now the associate editor at Concrete Skateboarding magazine, and also contributes as a writer to SBC Skateboard. He’s had work published in American magazines, Skateboarder and The Skateboard Mag, and also has a regular column on Push.ca. Here is a glimpse into Frank’s day-to-day life in and around Vancouver.

The Proof

1. The Ritual: Not a damn thing happens until the morning espresso percolates.
2. The Lab: Hardly glam, but it’s a mess with a purpose for the most part.
3. I’ve worked with Jordan Hoffart a bunch over the years. He came up from Huntington for a visit recently, and handed over his first Pro model for my wall. It’s signed, “SK8 or DIE!!! Preferably the first one!”
4. My friend Brett at Rootdown Café on Broadway near Main has a dry sarcasm I can appreciate, and makes mean to-order sandys. This one’s the Chicken Little. It’s got guac in it, so I’m sold.
5. The Transports: Momentum wheels and Swiss Ceramics, the Nishiki, les pieds, and the Crazy 8.
6. Strathcona Skatepark: It’s close-by, sunny, and the Strath brethren are always down for a roll ‘n’ sip.
7. Margaret Pigott park in Kitsafornia: My mellow destination sunset spot for sure-shot moments of clarity.
8. Night Moves: Seb Templer wisely taught me to keep a coozie in the back pocket at all times in order to accommodate spontaneous coldies.

The Questions

What do you do and where?
I primarily work in the Canadian skateboard media. I’m the associate editor of Concrete Skateboarding magazine, I do some writing for SBC Skateboard magazine, and I’m a regular feature columnist for a growing website called Push.ca/skateboarding.

What neighborhood do you live in?
Little Vegas in Mount Pleasant, East Vancouver.

What are you working on?
I’m always working the deadline hustle. At Concrete, I’m assigning and following up on written content, doing some writing myself, then editing all the copy; I also provide some crunch-time design input when Kelly Litzenberger (Concrete’s editor/art director) is being the layout wizard. I get assignment calls from SBC Skateboard to do interviews and assorted pieces for any given issue. I also plan, schedule, and submit weekly pieces to Push.ca, and partake in random freelance work.

Where can we find your work?
On newsstands, in skateshops, online, on coffee tables, in bathrooms, and in paper recycling bins.

Thanks Frank! You can find more of his work at the following:

I know this guy! He used to run the best taxi service back in Winnipeg!

Just kidding buddy, those were the days though.

I’m actually pretty stoked for you frank..

I didn’t even know the dude was into writing and then all of a sudden he’s the main writer for SBC and has alias’s ‘n’ stuff.

    Good work Friz-ank.
