During the daytime, Christy Nyiri is a graphic designer and artist. By night (most notably) she makes comedy and karaoke videos with Weekened Leisure, a group who’s work floats in the gray niche between art and satire. Weekend Leisure has shown at ‘Empty Orchestra’ at the Justina M Barnicke Gallery in Toronto, ‘Celebrities of the Self’ at the Kamloops Art Gallery, FUSE at the VAG, and at their own karaoke night at The Funky Winkerbeans. On top of that, they have their own cable access show! When she is not making karaoke videos or 3 tiered wedding cakes for her friends, she is making art with Norma, an art collective that does performance art, often including drinking. Watch out for their performance during the Olympics, curated by Artspeak. Her next karaoke night is TONIGHT at the Funky Winkerbeans, don’t miss it!

The Proof

1. My friend David Look and I went to Costco on our lunch breaks to buy cheap external hard drives and a tray of recession muffins but neither of us has a membership. Whoops, time for eating.
2. My 12″ powerbook (still goin’ strong) and desk, where I work on perfecting my office bum.
3. These were the coveted last two Jamaican patties that remained from the frozen dozen I flew back from TO with in May. RIP, spicy beef.
4. Just bought this darling ensemble for our first rap video; we’re spitting rhymes about health. I have flow like Kanye.
5. I also have a four-leaf clover collection that’s stupidly large.
6. My ginger boyfriend just became employed, which is VERY exciting. I guess I lose my house-slave but gain more Vij dinners.
7. My other fellow ginger, Julia, is building this amazing secret bar in an undisclosed backyard to use as a film set. She free-pours homemade apple wine if you ask nicely.
8. We recently had our first Weekend Leisure Karaoke DJ session at Funky Winker Bean’s. The night started with bad wiring and ended with crowd surfing. Success!

I do designs, websites, illustrations, videos, baking, bad singing, drinking, occasional performance arting, procrastinating. Generally within walking distance of my apartment.

Gastown. I also work here. I refuse to leave.
