The Proof – char2d2

POSTED July 30, 2009 BY Jennilee

char2d2 (Charla McCutecheon) is a multi-talented musician. Prior to her re-incarnation as char2d2, Charla McCutcheon played in Vancouver indy pop favorite Bella (Mint Records). She cut her teeth supporting such acts as The Breeders and Imperial Teen and released two critically acclaimed full lengths, 2007’s No One Will Know and 2004’s Pretty Mess. After a trip to Paris, Charla wrote new music that caught the attention of Tegan Quin (Tegan and Sara), who fell madly in love with her sound – and insisted on producing char2d2’s debut EP. Rounding out the team, John Collins (The New Pornographers) and David Carswell (The Smugglers) stepped in to engineer and mix. Small Vampires was born. Be sure to check her out tonight at 9pm at the Biltmore. Here is Charla’s day to day.

The Proof
1. Spilled cherries outside of my apartment.
2. The vacant lot where the local wildlife play *rats and pigeons*
3. I like long bike rides along the beach…hehe.
4. This apartment had no door…it was removed and the 4am techno dancer inhabitants were also removed.
5. Blood or cherry juice.
6. New way to tie curtains, new way to build heritage buildings.
7. Heartache burned into the linoleum; G.B. whoever you are, you are loved.
8. The neighbourhood.

The Questions

What do you do and where?
I write/play music on keyboards, and guitars in Vancouver, B.C.  I played bass guitar/keys/main singer/songwriter for Bella from 2003-2008 (this was my first band).  But I started writing music/songs when I started playing guitar at age 21. In my spare time, I sew, ride bikes, make chickpea salads & smoothies with my bandmate Eric.  And I also enjoy making up vegan muffin recipes (even though I’m not vegan).

What neighborhood do you live in?
I live in Gastown.

What are you working on?
I plan on touring this fall.  I’m currently writing for the full length album, release date to be announced.

Where can we find your work?

I have an upcoming show on July 30th @ the Biltmore.

My album can be found at www.maplemusic.com, will be available on itunes on July 24th and can be found in Vancouver at Zulu Records and Red Cat Records.

Learn more about Charla at  www.char2d2.com Thanks Charla!
