Earlier this week I wrote an OPEN LETTER to the Vancouver Park Board asking what the deal is with these houses that are in all the parks around town. Today one of the Park Board's commissioners, Sarah Blyth, was kind enough to offer us some insight...
"The fieldhouses are very cool. They were initially built to support the users of sports fields in our parks. Some of them appear as if Snow White and the Seven dwarves live in them and some not as much. I have also wondered as I walked by them what it would be like to live in one. There are 40 field houses through out Vancouver's 223 parks. The people that live and them are a variety of folk; some young, some are old, they are all private citizens and not Park Board employees. They open, close and Maintain park washrooms. They play an important, unofficial role as eyes and ears in the parks. If a caretaker moves out of a facility, the Park Board decides if they still need to have a caretaker, or they may turn the space into something else or turn it back to green space depending on what is needed. Over the years the number of fieldhouses have declined. Until decisions are made by the Park Board about the role of these fieldhouses in providing washroom services across the city, we are not looking for any new caretakers."
