If you want to read ugly, bad news about this beautiful city of ours, you’re going to have to look to traditional media and other blogs; V.I.A. promotes everything that makes our city awesome, from old to new and everything inbetween. We’re like the human interest piece on the news… only different.

CITY GARDEN UPDATE

September 29, 2009

As the growing season almost draws to a close I would like to share with you one of the single best things that came out of my amateur garden this year: zucchini! Almost no maintenance, I pulled like 20 of these off of two plants over the span of a few months.

zuchinni

At the beginning of the season I think I just might have promised a detailed report on what type of veggies grew the best in our my garden/our local climate but that full report is going to have to wait a few years until I am far more learned on the subject of Lower Mainland horticulture.

But if all goes according to plan I will have one more garden post this season.

HOLY CRAP SALE!

September 28, 2009

I truly wish I could tell you that I went to this sale on Arbutus, but I didn’t. Maybe the mystery of what was is better than what actually was?

In short: awesome sign, dudes.

DUMB HOCKEY QUESTIONS PART 1

September 28, 2009

A few times a year our sports editor, Jef Choy, brings me to a hockey game. Always an awesome time, we’ve been to the Giants once and the Canucks a ton of times (and the Grizzlies a few times if you want to look way back into our sporting event past) and even though I love watching hockey on TV and have a pretty decent grasp on the rules of the game, I always have a couple of dumb questions for him. He plays ball hockey (AHEM!) and is jock enough to enter a hockey pool every year and follow trades and stats and stuff like that so I always assume that he has all of the answers to my hockey rules questions… and he usually does.

This week we checked out the Ducks Vs ‘Nucks preseason game (which we unfortunately, barely, lost in OT), and the best dumb question that I had for him during the game was:

“If a dude’s stick breaks, is he allowed to keep playing with a half of a stick? Like is it legal to bat at the puck if your stick is not intact?”

vancouvercanucks
in this photo: the canucks just scored and there is a dude named Bliznack sitting in the foreground

Sadly the answer is no, you’re not allowed to do that. You can go to the bench and grab another stick or play stickless, but rolling around with a broken stick (a bat, essentially) in your hands is against the rules and you’ll get a penalty if you do that.

Stay tuned until after the next game I attend with Choy for another edition of Dumb Hockey Questions!

BC Fashion Week Spring 2010

September 27, 2009

bcfashionweek

BC Fashion Week Spring 2010 is on for another season! I attended last fall as a photographer and had a blast. With a change of a team, this season should be even more exciting. The fashion craziness along with all the sweet swagger and models will be going strong all week with shows lined up every day with after parties included. The schedule of all fashion shows is available HERE

Most of the shows are INVITE ONLY but the following are public and cost money:

Variety – Monday @ 5pm / $50
Youth in Fashion – Wednesday @ 11am / $15
Generation Next – Wednesday @ 2pm / $15

For tickets please contact: contact@bcfashionweek.com although I bet just buying tickets at the door will also work.

I will be doing photo coverage of BCFW for V.I.A. so tune in on Sunday to check out all the madness – but even better, actually come out to some of the shows.

52 WEEKS OF ‘EAST VAN CATS’ – WEEK 6

September 27, 2009

The cats rule East Vancouver. They’re everywhere…sidewalks, roads, hiding in doorways, supervising stores, sprawled out anywhere to have a bath. The cats I meet while wandering through East Van are probably all house-pets but it’s not clear who ‘owns’ them. Cats are all about territory, but all space is public to them.

week6

Stay tuned…When the project is finished I hope to have photographed every one of the East Van Cats!
