These words and images came in from our soon-to-be-regular-contributor, thebillionaire…

“Flogging Molly played the Commodore October 29th and 30th. Their first show on Thursday (which was actually the first show of their tour) was amazing, they definitely gave 110%. Read more

Dogtown Vancouver: Odin

October 31, 2009

It’s a new dog every day, click here to find out how to get your dog featured here if you haven’t sent in your photos yet!

Today’s dog featured in Dogtown Vancouver is Odin, Rayna W’s pup. Here’s what he had to say about himself…

NAME: Odin.
BREED: Lab/Pittie X.
HOOD: Fairview/Kits-ish hood.
FAVORITE SNACK: Is this a trick question?
OTHER INFO: After spending a while at the pound I rather dislike confined spaces … The second day home with my new ‘human’ I ate a giant hole in her bedroom door and squeezed myself through it to freedom (and the sofa) while she was out.

V.I.A. EDITOR PROFILE – FRANK DANIELLO

October 30, 2009

Frank Daniello is our SKATEBOARDING editor, who for an actual job is Canada’s most prolific (and my favourite) skateboard magazine writer. Having been regularly published in most of the major mags over the years, I think Frank might be one of the least-thanked-yet-most-important people in the skateboard industry in this country. We’re thankful that Frank takes the time to clue our readers in on the happenings of the scene here in Vancouver while promoting the culture coast to coast.

THIS IS WHAT FRANK’S FRIDGE LOOKS LIKE:
frankdaniello

AND HERE’S A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HIM:

What neighborhood do you live in?
Little Vegas, Mount Pleasant.

What’s your favourite thing to do in your neighborhood?
Hillbomb “Suicide 7th” on the cruiser board. It’s not as harsh as the name implies, and it’s always fun.

What do you do?
Skateboard, snowboard, skimboard, pedal, couch-critique hockey, eat, drink, look, listen, and sleep (not enough). I also write, edit, and interview for a couple Canadian skateboard publications and websites.

Who’s your favourite Vancouverite?
Oh, man. I really can’t narrow it down to just one. Picking a single favourite is not my forte.

What’s the best thing that has ever happened to you in this city?
The friends I’ve met over the last 10 years of living here. Vancouver, among other things, has also inspired me to realize a fulfilling path I didn’t see as fully possible before.

What else do you want people to know about you?
I really enjoy cooking, and earned my keep in the restaurant biz for a number of years. I’ve since “retired” from that world, but still do the odd cameo shift with a group of friends I’ve worked with over the years. It’s fun, and it’s good to stay in kitchen-practice—an essential life skill.

FOOD FAIR FRIDAY! INTERNATIONAL FOOD FAIR!

October 30, 2009

This was one of my first classy food fair finds, it’s located at 530 Hornby Street and from the outside it doesn’t look like much, but it’s a gem.  Food fairs are usually hidden in the basement of an office tower, but this one you actually go up stairs and combined with all the natural light from the front windows, it’s got some great ambience.  As you can see by the photos it’s a narrow building which makes it feel a bit less like a cafeteria.

The busiest place here is once again, the Indian place, India Abroad quite possibly makes the best Butter chicken downtown.  The line up on this guy though is long so it’s best to hit it up rather at 11:30 or after 1pm.

The other really nice perk at this food fair is at the Chinese place they give you real bowls.  You have to return them of course but it’s definitely better than eating out of a styrofoam container.

“GUERRILLAS IN OUR MIDST”
OUR WEEKLY LOOK AT THE BEST OF GUERRILLA GIVING – WEEK 5

October 30, 2009

We recently told you about this awesome, anonymous, local family dedicated to giving away 10% of their modest income to random Vancouverites in an almost sneaky sort of way.

Seeing as what they’re doing in Vancouver is one of the most awesome things we’ve seen in a long time, we’ve invited the unknown humans behind the Guerrilla Giving project to share their latest drops with you once a week from here on out. Follow their progress, learn about what they’re doing and why they’re doing it but don’t ask who they are because even we don’t know the answer to that question!

I proudly bring you week 5 of “Guerrillas In Our Midst”!

**********

On Monday Guerrilla Giving saluted one of the grand old theatres of the golden age of cinema–The Hollywood. Have a look here.
