THE WAVE!
I think our middle finger to wave ratio is second to none here in Vancouver. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen some terrible driving in this city, but I don’t think you get the wave anywhere else in the world like you get it in Vancouver.
When I think of road rage incidents in other cities, I think of Jack Nicholson smashing out a wind shield with a golf club. Here, when I take a spaz, I can be found saying things like….’Oh my god if that guy who I just let in, doesn’t give me the wave….I’m going to be sooooo mad.’ or from time to time an out of province plate….’Oh that’s why I didn’t get the wave….look where’ he’s from!’
I know we’re still looking for a coat of arms but I think I’ve found our secret handshake. The wave.

Thanks for letting us in Vancouver!

I always go out of my way to give the “your welcome” wave too. Even though 99% of the time the other driver can’t see it.

I always give the wave, it’s common courtesy here.

Yeah this is the only city i think in canada that the wave isn’t a regularly performed gesture. I think Calgary is a little better at it but pretty much most of canada does the wave, well east of saskatchewan.

P.S The wave is quite powerful and does solve a lot of traffic issues and cancels a lot of frustration

i gotta agree with the last comment. the wave helps tone down the frustation…

Yup, just like everyone else I give the wave as needed. Too bad 99% of the time I don’t get it back.

I’ve used the wave to apologise after being honked at for pulling out when I probably shouldn’t have… only to get the wave back at me from the protaganist… leaving me with no option to wave back :D

i’m a thumbs up guy myself. works when you’re happy or ticked!

Totally agree with Silva…you get the wave at least 10 times more in Toronto than you do in Vancouver. Even though I keep this in mind, I’m still always disappointed when someone doesn’t wave after I’ve let them in.

I give the peace sign to cars who let me sneak into their lane quickly while my bike lane has been taken over by cars who don’t know how to turn right on a red. (hint, hint…vancouver drivers)

i’d love to flash da shaka, but i’m not sure if it is ‘universal’ enough that i won’t get a ‘wtf’ look or an ‘fu’ type of honk. but yeah, it definitely chills me out when someone waves while they snake in front of me.

haha so hilarious! Although I did get one guy actually run out of his car at a red light to try to come yell at me! He must have been a tourist.

I think Vancouver drivers could be a bit more courteous and let you in more often. I find I get ignored more here than in other provinces. Having said that, the wave is essential and I love saluting a friendly and understanding driver.

the wave goes sooo far. I give a great, big wave when I cut someone off. I give a great, big wave when I get cut-off. I give a great, big wave when someone just lets me in… Man, I wave a lot. And rarely get one back.
it all starts with one wave though!

Dig the wave…
When I was living in Mexico, the passenger sticks their arm out the window and waves it around to ask for permission to switch to the right lane. Works like a charm.
