When I was living in Mexico, the passenger sticks their arm out the window and waves it around to ask for permission to switch to the right lane. Works like a charm.

the wave goes sooo far. I give a great, big wave when I cut someone off. I give a great, big wave when I get cut-off. I give a great, big wave when someone just lets me in… Man, I wave a lot. And rarely get one back.

it all starts with one wave though!

I think Vancouver drivers could be a bit more courteous and let you in more often. I find I get ignored more here than in other provinces. Having said that, the wave is essential and I love saluting a friendly and understanding driver.

i’d love to flash da shaka, but i’m not sure if it is ‘universal’ enough that i won’t get a ‘wtf’ look or an ‘fu’ type of honk. but yeah, it definitely chills me out when someone waves while they snake in front of me.

I give the peace sign to cars who let me sneak into their lane quickly while my bike lane has been taken over by cars who don’t know how to turn right on a red. (hint, hint…vancouver drivers)

Totally agree with Silva…you get the wave at least 10 times more in Toronto than you do in Vancouver. Even though I keep this in mind, I’m still always disappointed when someone doesn’t wave after I’ve let them in.
