THE BURNABY TURTLES

December 30, 2009

If I lived in Burnaby and I had any sort of sporting team I would most definitely name them The Burnaby Turtles. Not only does it have a nice ring to it but it also rings true, as pet stores are not allowed to sell turtles in the City of Vancouver – only in Burnaby – so that’s where all the legit Turtles come from. You gotta smuggle em in from Metrotown. This is the fact that I know and I know that it has something to do with turtles spreading salmonella poisoning and the city passing some sortof bylaw a long time ago against them to protect folks from themselves. Any turtle lovers out there know the full details? My sketchy speculation/hearsay simply won’t do on this one.

Bo Laksa Bling

December 29, 2009

Taking up a suggestion on a comment on my last post on Laksa/Singa/Malay food, I hit up BO LAKSA KING’S esp since its super close to my hood. This is a true hidden gem in that its really kinda hidden and really a gem. Its basically a small little take out (hawker) stall inside the Joyce-Way Food Market which is just north of Joyce Station (on the east side of Joyce street). I went there for the Laksa (and its def guuud) but to my pleasant surprise, I found a dish offered here that Ive been looking for ever since I tried this well known Burmese restaurant in Oakland/San Fran……..(continued under the cut)

THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS
ACTOR MACKENZIE GRAY SPEAKS AT TWO RIO SHOWINGS

December 29, 2009

This past Sunday night I went to go see The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus at the Rio Theatre on Broadway at Commercial and before the film started was wondering why the heck there was a mic sitting dead center in front of the screen. My wife whispered to me something about hoping they were going to move it before the flick started when all of a sudden one of the actors from the film got up on the stage and introduced the movie and told us stories about working with director Terry Gilliam. Amazing. Thank you Rio and thank you said actor, Mackenzie Gray, for coming down to talk at the theatre that night.

CATS IN SWEATERS?

December 29, 2009

I keep asking you for photos of your dogs wearing sweaters and you keep sending them in! And seeing as we have EAST VAN CATS to offset the DOGTOWN posts, I figured I would be perfectly fair and share with you all this photo of a cat wearing a cozy Christmas sweater that Savannah from Music BC sent in…

“This is Monkey, the diabetic French-Canadian super cat. He speaks 3 languages and poops rainbows. But seriously, he’s pretty much the sweetest thing ever. Here he is in his fat-cat-in-a-little-sweater get up.”

catinasweater

So I guess this is an open call for you to send me photos of your dogs in sweater and your cats in sweaters. Actually, scratch that (pun intended), send me a photo of any pet that you own wearing a sweater and I will post it for everyone to see. Maybe you’ve got a pet squirrel or a chinchilla or a hamster that you’ve knitted a special creation for? I want to see it.

LETTER OF THE WEEK: EXPO 86!

December 28, 2009

“Vancouver IS awesome, I lived there for 7 years.
So I was making this ultra cheese slide show for a friend when I came across your scavenger hunt. I performed at expo86 as a representative of the Peace River Region of BC, where I lived at the time. We were a gymnastics team from Tumbler Ridge BC that performed on the Plaza of Nations stage 3 times a day and a few other smaller stages.
Thats me on the right in the red spandex, I was 11.
It’s crazy to think I performed on the same stage as A-ha and annie lenox.
wow.
Jon”
