EAST VAN CROSS

POSTED January 12, 2010 BY Bob Kronbauer
Tweet

This is, to me, the best sculpture in the City Of Vancouver. Period. Just erected, it’s located at the corner of Clark Drive and 6th Ave (Great Northern Way) and it faces West. Almost exactly at the halfway point between my house and the V.I.A. office, I will enjoy driving past this institution of Vancouver (which you no doubt recognize and I shouldn’t have to explain it’s history to you), now cast in aluminum, made possible by artist Ken Lum (remember Ken from the Gingerbread House contest?), twice a day.

Send in your photos of this insignia (on walls, jean jackets, tattoos, etc) and we’ll post a gallery of them!

Thank you Mr Lum! Here another photo taken from the back, on Clark…

    Davey,
I checked your IP address (203.184.17.159) and you’re actually visiting the site from a computer in Australia. What dose represent you?

    one coming out?

  • Derek

That’s great, some trendy screen print has been turned into a massive eyesore of a sculpture for all the E. Van hipsters to worship.

  • hojero

that sign is so east van

  • Jonathan

Ew! I saw this today. Fail!

  • Bill

    gross.

  • rf

it needs some spray paint imo

  • calen

derek needs a history lesson. Im glad you moved here from ontario with your opinions.

  • Jef Choy

and he didn’t mean ontario street either….

It’ seems like a pretty good spot for it too….

  • http://cococakecupcakes.blogspot.com lyndsay

HOORAY!!! saw it driving the other day, then saw it on the skytrain home tonight… total bizarre/weird beacon… actually it did induce some pride admittedly.

everyone with negi comments should do some ken lum research on his past work and on this sign…

  • Julio Aguilar

that is so interesting!! can you see it from skytrain? i was on it sunday, guess i wasnt paying attentinon… is it around the commercial drive station, looks like the grandview cut…

    thats like intantly iconic

  • Jef Choy

Wonder if we’ll see a New West one. Too bad you couldn’t do like Kerrisdale in an upside down cross….

  • http://www.garywarrenhubbs.com Gary

The photos of this didn’t prepare me to see it in real life; this thing is MASSIVE. I like it, I like the debate it has sparked. The world would be pretty boring if we all liked the same things.

  • http://cococakecupcakes.blogspot.com lyndsay

you can see it traveling eastbound on the skytrain between main st/science world stop to commercial/broadway…

luv it. east van rocks!!! looks even better at night. makes me smile to see some neighbourhood representation. born and bred, baby.

  • Jonathan

    @ Lyndsay

Why should people do research? I don’t need to know who the artist is or what he does to find something fugly. Seriously ugly. And no, I’m not from Ontario, calen, before you snap at me. I know the history. History makes it no less hideous.

  • http://www.blueskytshirts.com John Foy

Today and all week we have been threaten by thugs for the fact that we are offering East Van cross t-shirts in our store on Commercial Dr. Any one aware of copywright infrigment on a public display as the city erected this cross?

  • http://flavors.me/crompton Crompton

So good. Represents the East Van I came up in and the future too. Love it.

  • Sam!!

I like how there’s the history of this symbol before it was screen-printed, yet no one has tipped it yet. Keep it on the dl, yo! It’s an East Van thang, and you wouldn’t understand.

In the early ’90s, rumour had it that you couldn’t wear purple out at Metrotown for fear of getting rocked by these guys.

  • m!

    EAST VAN 4 LIFE HOMIES.

  • http://redrash.blogspot.com sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

I freakin’ love it! Please say it is permanent

  • http://www.bobkronbauer.com Bob K

    It is permanent.

  • http://van-media.blogspot.com/ A L

Before I give my verdict, here’s a history lesson about me:
    1) I’ve read about Ken Lum. I liked his four boats sculptures on the Gallery.
    2) I’ve lived in East Van for almost 30 years.
    3) I appreciate artists and creativity.

    Having said that…

the sculpture sucks. It’s an eyesore, like the billboards along Highway 1 and Burrard Bridge. Somebody please take it down.

  • Duane

A sculpture is put up in an incredibly ugly part of the city. The eyesore sure aint the sculpture which actually gives life to this area.

  • Gang Banger

    East Side Gang Bangers Unite!!!

  • jeffrey

I live near this cross, and I am so offended that the city paid for this. It’s one thing if it was on top of a church, but to have the city pay for this? A cross doesn’t represent me and frankly it makes me want to move!

  • Commercial Chris

If you don’t get it, you never will.
    Keep Crying. Wah.

We had the East Van cross plastered everywhere back in 1980 during high school years at Temp.
I guess I should say this…”It’s about time.”

  • chris

im not saying you shouldn’t have pride or rep your city but they could have found a better way then putting up this ugly plain sign and trying to pass it off as actual art

  • http://www.members.shaw.ca/laurazerebeski/ Laurazee

    It’s beautiful.
