CULTURAL OLYMPIAD SHOWS

POSTED January 19, 2010 BY Bob Kronbauer

The Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad music shows kick off this weekend with Phoenix and YSP!WSD! at the Orpheum!!! If you’re unaware, the Cultural Olympiad is “music, dance, theatre, visual arts, film, outdoor spectaculars and digital media experiences”. Basically, it’s a ton of performances starting January 22 and ending March 21st, and it promises to be super awesome.

I must admit that I’m most excited about all of the amazing live music performances that are a part of this. Below is a full list of all the music shows, we’ll be bringing you coverage of a bunch of them. Have a look at the Cultural Olympiad site for a complete listing of all of the shows and for info on venues and how to get tickets…

So many great bands but – I’m kind of surprised they’re all at the Orpheum.

(I don’t want to come up against the trash-talk rule so I’m going to keep it polite.) While the Orpheum is lovely and beautiful it’s also a room that keeps the audiences really docile, and that takes away from the energy of a show for me. Recently I was at a Tegan & Sara concert there and they had to beg the audience to stand up out of their seats! I’d rather go and see K’naan or Phoenix or Joel Plaskett at the Commodore or another venue.

I’ve got to hit up the Neil Young tribute show, though. Too bad Chromeo and Phoenix are sold out already!

Great Northern Way, Roundhouse, the Commodore… which list are you looking at? I love having a seat at a show and am stoked to see Stars at the Orpheum! Grant Lawrence did a thing on his radio show about this very subject a couple weeks back…

Might not be able to mosh but the sound at the Orpheum is boss. I think the capacity at the Orpheum is also higher than the Commodore. Its like the Commodore is guaranteed to be available for any band either esp since bands are on tight tour schedules as well. Plaza of Nations was another midsize venue that is gone, though the sound wasnt all that there. Fortue Sound and Venue add to new larger club sized venues for shows, along with the renovated Cultch, Rickshaw….

Oh wow, thanks for posting this, Bob. Didn’t know Stars was coming to town, and I love them to bits.

  • Frances Cabahug

Got my Stars tickets since December. That’s how excited I am.

    Frances,
See you there!!! So excited for that show.

Anyone have any trouble taking pictures at the events at Great Northern Way Campus? In other words, how uptight is the door staff?
