THE PROOF: ROSS MILNE

Ross has a fantastic, quirky personality. He is always full of positivity and full of surprises. And on the flip-side he is one of the most qualified and professional designers I know today.

Ross has a fantastic, quirky personality. He is always full of positivity and full of surprises. And on the flip-side he is one of the most qualified and professional designers I know today. Younger than most of the people we graduated with at Emily Car University he is by far one of the most accomplished. He has been across the globe and back since graduating, completing his Type & Media studies at KABK (Royal Academy of Art) and then working in San Francisco for a number of boutique firms while his fiance Grace worked for Chronical Books as a designer (can we say Power Couple?). He likes wine, loves music, he’s an amazing cook, a pretty good Settlers of Catan player, and a wonderful friend. This hard working guy is a total nerd, the kind that takes over the world before the rest of us have even had breakfast. - Gillian Damborg

The Proof

1. My work desk at home.

2. Some recent type and design related projects for CJSW radio in Calgary, San Francisco's Asian American Film Festival, Esquire Magazine, and a few personal projects.

3. Found type in the form of a hand-painted sign. I keep a pretty large collection of this stuff from Vancouver and abroad.

4. Kite Flying at Vanier Park. Probably one of my favourite activities on a nice sunny day.

5. Grace, my sounding board for ideas and partner in crime.

6. Lunch at La Taqueria. Since I work from home, getting out has become essential. I've been known to invent reasons to head into Gastown just so I can stop off at 322 Hastings.

7. Tankers in English Bay. It's an obvious image of Vancouver, but after living in the West End, it's undeniably iconic.

8. History plays a big role in my work. This particular book is a collection of type specimens dating back to the 16th century.

The Questions

What neighborhood do you live in?

The West End, in the little enclave known as West of Denman. Before we moved here, it was the one neighbourhood I was hesitant to live in. After 9 months, I'm sold.

What do you do and where?

I'm working as a solo graphic and type designer from my home studio. In addition to my graphic design work, I design custom typefaces and logotypes for various clients.

What are you working on?

I just completed a project for Commercial Type/Esquire magazine. I'm also working on the design of my own typeface, Foxtrot, which will hopefully be published early 2010.
