VANCOUVER LIBRARIES GOOGLE MAP
CARE OF THE CITY’S OPEN DATA CATALOGUE

January 28, 2010

Over the next few days I’m going to be sharing some of the Google maps that have been put together by the city as a part of their Open Data Catalogue project. Originally it was a bit Jonny Mnemonic and I was struggling to find actual uses for the data they were providing (which is available in all sorts of computer languages and database formats) but with their 2.0 launch it’s definitely something that normal folks are able to benefit from.

This one’s a map marking all of the libraries in the city… go get smarter’d at one of em!

THE PROOF: ALANNA SCOTT

January 28, 2010

Designer, coder, artist, and thing-maker, Alanna Scott is a multi-faceted Vancouverite (transplanted from Winnipeg, Manitoba!) whose 3 favorite letters are D, I and Y. She splits her time between working at Mainsocial and freelancing, drawing, sewing and screenprinting at her gastown studio. When not working hard making websites and other pretty things, Alanna likes hanging out with buddies, drinking brewskis and having fun, as well as spending time with her favorite kidlets: her neice and nephew, Jada and Karson.
- Lauren Scott

The Proof

1. Drawing on a window in my studio.
2. Hanging out in the summer with best buddies, eating good food. Looking forward to summer time bbq’s already!
3. I was making a zine for hard feelings, as an insert for their new record.
4. A corner of my studio with …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>

DAILY FLICKR PICKR – DAY 107
Our Olympic Coverage… YOUR Olympic Coverage!

January 28, 2010

Contrary to our original plan of simply gleaning peripheral stories here and there, we’ve actually got quite a bit of coverage of the 2010 Games planned for next month. We’ve got folks attending a bunch of Cultural Olympiad shows (starting tonight with Phoenix!), we’ll be blogging from our Awesome Showcase at Shine delivering stories from out-of-towners and their experiences in our city and even though we got denied media accreditation some of us might even be attending some sporting events as fans with point and shoot cameras. Go figure.

All of that being said, I think what I’m most excited to report to you is that our DAILY FLICKR PICKR series of photos that we post from our Flickr pool will be all Olympics themed until the closing ceremonies. Every day we’ll be bringing a new image that one of our readers has uploaded to our pool that is somehow Games related, making our Olympic coverage your Olympic coverage! I believe we’re still allowed to use the “O” word up until February 12th but if I am mistaken then you will see this title change from “Your Olympic Coverage” to “Your Fun Time Non Summer Sporting Contest Coverage” soon enough.

So join our Flickr pool and upload your photos!

Today’s DAILY FLICKR PICKR is a photo courtesy of Clayton Perry, and the title is “Getting Dressed For The Olympics”:

THE GREASEBUS! A FREE SHUTTLE TO GROUSE

January 28, 2010

I’ve got to say, the most awesome name for anything Olympics-related so far has GOT to be The Greasebus! At first I was picturing a bus filled with hungover patrons being served a catered, Bon’s-style breakfast for all who took it but was pleasantly surprised to learn that there’s no grease in the cabin; this free shuttle up the mountain actually runs off of the waste from the Grouse Mountain kitchen. Soybean oil fuel!

Here’s the official word:
DC ALL-NIGHTER GREASEBUS GIVES LOCALS ACCESS TO GROUSE MOUNTAIN
Free shuttle service with zero sulfur dioxide emissions will operate February 12th – 28th, 2010.
January 22, 2010 – Vancouver, BC – The DC All-Nighter Bus will offer local snowboarders transportation to Grouse Mountain at no charge for over two weeks next month. Grouse Mountain will be open 24/7 February 12th – 28th and to accommodate local riders access to North Vancouver, the DC All-Nighter Bus will operate from 8PM – 6AM daily. Vancouver snowboard retailer The Boardroom and the Lonsdale Quay bus loop, will act as the main drop off and pick up locations for …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>

NEW FACES OF BC PHOTO EXHIBIT DEADLINE IS LOOMING!

January 28, 2010

You’ve only got a couple of days left to meet the deadline for entries to the Immigrant Services Society of BC’s (ISSofBC) photography exhibit called New Faces of British Columbia, to be held in Prince George, Abbotsford, Nanaimo and Vancouver.

They’re asking aspiring photographers and seasoned professionals alike to submit photos that “reflect on your view of BC’s changing demographics, celebrating our province’s multicultural spirit and bringing together new Canadians with long-term residents. As people make up the beauty and diversity in Canada, the photos should reflect the many people that call British Columbia their home.”

Submitting photos is suuuuper easy on THEIR SUBMISSION SITE, so hop to it by January 31st!

Artsy!Dartsy! Weekly 13!

January 28, 2010
artsydartsy_via Greetings Vancouver is Awesome readers! We here at Artsy-Dartsy are proud to be contributors to VIA. A brief background on us: We are Linus and Denise. So pleased to meet you! We love art and design, hence we started a website called Artsy-Dartsy.com to help people like us find out about art and design events in our awesome city of Vancouver! This week there are tons of great events happening. For the full listing please head to Artsy-Dartsy.com.

Collage is one of those mediums that has a special little place in our hearts. We love that a bunch of existing images can be cut up and glued together in a fasinating way. Catriona Jeffries presents a new show Geoffrey Farmer: The Surgeon and the Photographer. Inspired by Aby Warburg’s Memory Atlas, this ambitious project uses the conceptual framework of a calendar in which to arrange and display 365 paper and cloth figures. Using a collage technique, cutting photographs from books, Farmer, like Warburg, employs a display technique to engage the viewer in a fluid non-hierarchical, non-historical, cross-cultural consideration of images and ideas.

Farmer will also be presenting a new video work that has been developed to accompany this project.

Other Notables: Pamela Masik shows the Forgotten, Western Front presents Learning from Vancouver, and 221A Artist Run Centre holds a fundraiser for the Helen Pitt Gallery. Please see Artsy!Dartsy! for details on more opening receptions.

“THE WORDS DON’T FIT THE PICTURE”

January 27, 2010

The newest rollout via the Olympic and Paralympic Public Art Program is a public art installation located (permanently) in front of the Vancouver Public Library (Central Branch), on the corner of Homer/Robson.

This really cool art structure was designed by Vancouver artist, Ron Terada and is titled, “The Words Don’t Fit The Picture”.
