VANCOUVER HERITAGE PROPERTY GOOGLE MAP
CARE OF THE CITY’S OPEN DATA CATALOGUE

January 27, 2010

Over the next few days I’m going to be sharing some of the Google maps that have been put together by the city as a part of their Open Data Catalogue project. Originally it was a bit Jonny Mnemonic and I was struggling to find actual uses for the data they were providing (which is available in all sorts of computer languages and database formats) but with their 2.0 launch it’s definitely something that normal folks are able to benefit from.

This one’s rad, it’s a Google map marking all of the heritage sites in the city… kinda looks like the whole city’s made of em!

DAILY FLICKR PICKR – DAY 106
Our Olympic Coverage… YOUR Olympic Coverage!

January 27, 2010

Contrary to our original plan of simply gleaning peripheral stories here and there, we’ve actually got quite a bit of coverage of the 2010 Games planned for next month. We’ve got folks attending a bunch of Cultural Olympiad shows (starting tonight with Phoenix!), we’ll be blogging from our Awesome Showcase at Shine delivering stories from out-of-towners and their experiences in our city and even though we got denied media accreditation some of us might even be attending some sporting events as fans with point and shoot cameras. Go figure.

All of that being said, I think what I’m most excited to report to you is that our DAILY FLICKR PICKR series of photos that we post from our Flickr pool will be all Olympics themed until the closing ceremonies. Every day we’ll be bringing a new image that one of our readers has uploaded to our pool that is somehow Games related, making our Olympic coverage your Olympic coverage! I believe we’re still allowed to use the “O” word up until February 12th but if I am mistaken then you will see this title change from “Your Olympic Coverage” to “Your Fun Time Non Summer Sporting Contest Coverage” soon enough.

So join our Flickr pool and upload your photos!

Today’s DAILY FLICKR PICKR is a photo courtesy of Jeremy Lim, and the title is “Believe”:

Nike 6.0 and Mt. Seymour unveil the Red Ledge
This Saturday, January 30th at 11AM

January 27, 2010

Remember Nike 6.0‘s Greatest Hits thing where they’re reconstructing spots up at Seymour? Well, the first feature to be reconstructed is the Red Ledge, a daunting concrete monster whose big brother is located at Montmorency Falls in Quebec City. Made famous by seasoned film crews, the Red Ledge may be wide, but it’s steep and fast – and don’t underestimate the power of that bottom kink. Many banger tricks have gone down here while several other brave souls have been broke off at the Ledge.

“I remember the first time I saw someone hit the Red Ledge and it looked surreal. I’ve always wanted to ride it, but just haven’t made it that way. I’m pumped it will be in my backyard at Mt. Seymour and available for all the local riders to hit!” Kevin Sansalone, Nike 6.0 Canada Snow Mentor.

To unveil the Red Ledge, Nike 6.0 is hosting a grassroots jam session at Mt. Seymour this Saturday, January 30th. The free jam session, open to all, goes down 11:00 AM-3:00 PM, and includes food, music, and 6.0 product giveaways. Be sure to bring your …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>

Dogtown Vancouver: Ruby

January 27, 2010

It’s a new dog every day, click here to find out how to get your dog featured here if you haven’t sent in your photos yet!

Today’s dog featured in Dogtown Vancouver is Ruby, Anthony S’s pup. Here’s what he had to say about her…

NAME: Ruby.
BREED: Bug (Boston Terrier and Pug) .
HOOD: South Granville.
FAVORITE SNACK: Your Face.
OTHER INFO: Ruby is the “shop dog” at Kitsilano’s friendliest bike shop, Dizzy Cycles (@4th and Burrard). You can probably find her sleeping in a cat bed in the shops front window, or at the Kits dog beach rolling around in something extra gross. She loves to fetch, and when she does chances are she’s going to thrash it to bits. A woman at the park once told me she thrashes things around like that because the Boston Terrier in her was bred to kill rats. Not too sure about that, but I like the name. Rat Killer. Sounds super metal.

STUMBLING BLOCK

January 26, 2010

I’m no expert in photography, but I recently saw this photo by Jeff Wall and thought…’Man alive, that’s Chibbs!’  Ben Chibber is the owner of the Dryspot and Monke skateboards, back in 1991, he was one of the most serious skaterats downtown when he was approached to do the photo.

VANCOUVER GRAFFITI GOOGLE MAP
CARE OF THE CITY’S OPEN DATA CATALOGUE

January 26, 2010

Over the next few days I’m going to be sharing some of the Google maps that have been put together by the city as a part of their Open Data Catalogue project. This one’s interesting, it’s a Google map containing the city tracked graffiti in Vancouver. Not sure if this is noting like legal, commissioned graf or what because don’t they buff over stuff mostly right away? That’s a lot of check marks!

Vancouver City Time Lapse

January 26, 2010

Earlier this month, we posted an excellent time lapse video that featured some magnificent scenes of Vancouver blanketed by mysterious fog.  The same people who created that video, David and Dan Newcomb, aka TimeLapseHD, are back with something new.  This time, they collaborated with Canadian music artists InnerLife Project to produce a stunningly beautiful piece entitled, “Vancouver City.”  Enjoy!

Note: Lower the quality of the video from 1080p once the video starts playing if you are having troubles viewing it.
