DAILY FLICKR PICKR – DAY 129
Our Olympic Coverage… YOUR Olympic Coverage!

February 27, 2010

Contrary to our original plan of simply gleaning peripheral stories here and there, we’ve actually got quite a bit of coverage of the 2010 Games planned now. We’ve got folks attending a bunch of Cultural Olympiad shows, we’re blogging from our Awesome Showcase at Shine delivering stories from out-of-towners and their experiences in our city and even though we’re not accredited to shoot any sporting events some of us are attending a couple as fans with point and shoot cameras. Plus you probably noticed that it just keeps coming in from all directions. Go figure.

All of that being said, I think what I’m most excited to report to you is that our DAILY FLICKR PICKR series of photos that we post from our Flickr pool will be all Olympics themed until the closing ceremonies. Every day we’ll be bringing a new image that one of you has uploaded to our pool that is somehow Games related, making our Olympic coverage your Olympic coverage!

So join our Flickr group and upload your photos!

Today’s DAILY FLICKR PICKR is a photo courtesy of Bob Lai, and the title is “Bobby Lu”:

Sochi 2014 fuzzball!

February 27, 2010

It’s official: I’ve got Olympic fever. It’s making me sweat just thinking about the end of these amazing times in our city (and on our televisions) but I’m taking solace in the fact that the Games will be back. They won’t ever be in our city again but having them hosted here has given me a huge new appreciation for them and I look forward to following them more closely in the future, if not saving my pennies for trips to the host cities to witness the magic and get a piece of the energy they are certain to bring wherever they may be.

The next Winter Olympics go down in Sochi, Russia in 2014 and in case you didn’t notice over the past two weeks they’ve presently taken over Science World and turned it into the Russky Dom! This fuzzy little guy is one of the mascot hopefuls, they haven’t announced who their official mascots will be (and they won’t be until 2011) but they got this costume made and they’re selling t-shirts with this guy on it so I think we know who has a decent chance at being the Quatchi of 2014.

Dogtown Vancouver: Bear

February 27, 2010

It’s a new dog every day, click here to find out how to get your dog featured here if you haven’t sent in your photos yet!

Today’s dog featured in Dogtown Vancouver is Bear, Alicia K’s pup. Here’s what she had to say about him…

NAME: Bear.
BREED: Chihuahua/Miniature pincher mix.
HOOD: Kits.
FAVORITE SNACK: Bones dipped in peanut butter and frozen blueberries.
OTHER INFO: If you have met Bear once he will jump 4 feet in the air every time he sees you. He splits his time between his moms house and his dads house because even though they’ve been over each other for years, neither can get over him. He constantly struggles with his weight- it’s a very sore subject for him, but he takes it day by day with the Zone Diet and boot camp work outs at kits beach. The hot housewives get him through the sit ups.

The Cheaper Show 9 – Deadline Looming

February 26, 2010

Are you an artist? Did you submit your work for consideration in the Cheaper Show 9 yet? You’ve only got until Sunday, so if you haven’t already then hop to it!

thecheapershowvancouver

The ninth edition of the biggest art show in Vancouver will be taking place in July with 200 artists presenting a total of 400 pieces of work priced at 200 dollars per piece… for one night only. If you’re an artist and want your work to be considered to be featured in this year’s show you should most definitely apply right now at thecheapershow.com.

Did you go to the last Cheaper Show? #8? They took over the old 16,000 square foot Storyeum space in Gastown and filled the walls with 150 artists from all over the world. Seven hours before the doors opened, the line-up began. A crowd of over 5000 showed up and purchased over 200 pieces of art in five hours. This year’s will be even better. Awesome!

Are Slovaks born with an extra hockosome?

February 26, 2010

I probably don’t have to tell you that Team Canada takes on Slovakia tonight in the men’s hockey semifinals and whoever wins this game will go on to the gold medal game against the USA on Sunday!!! What’s Team Canada’s secret to making it this far? It’s not fate, that’s for sure…

Also, in case you missed it we’ve been promoting Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe drive that’s going on in Vancouver right now. They’re recycling all of the shoes that you drop off and turning them into a new playing surface somewhere in the city. Awesome. Drop off your used shoes at one of these Vancouver locations and leave your footprint on the city!:
