The Proof – Syx Langemann

Syx Langemann is a Vancouver photographer and photo instructor that has been around the city for over 10 years and has helped in the creation and production of the Cheaper Show (with one coming up). One of his blogs, No Graffito, captures the random scrawls from Vancouver and the other cities he gets a chance to visit. Very funny images but also poetic and lyrical. Another of his sites, I was once a camera, had some great street shots, primarily from the Vancouver area. Here is his proof.

The Proof

1. Sometimes I get up early and have a chance to myself, sometimes, I don’t. Taryn & Hanna like watching me shave.
2. I spend a lot of time watching Hanna figure life out. This isn’t the prettiest time, but it’s f’n cute.
3. We often start our days with a family walk. Fog in Mount Pleasant park.
4. My current work/live studio. We’re moving to a new apartment over the Mount Pleasant Community Centre in March.
5. I teach at Vancouver Photo Workshops. This is a photo of my friend Eric taken during a lighting demonstration.
6. My regular view of my classes.
7. This is a set from one of the coolest photo assisting jobs I’ve had so far.
8. This is a old building near the town I grew up in, Wheatley, ON. This was taken this year on a month long visit and photo trip.

The Questions

What do you do and where?
I am a photographer, and instructor here in Vancouver. I shoot studio work at The Photo Haus Studios (Vancouver Photo Workshops) and I’ll generally go where ever my camera takes me. With my street series, this happens to be the pleasant smelling alleys in our city.

What neighborhood do you live in?
I live in the heart of mt pleasant. my new apartment looks down on the clock, Budgies, Gene, and The Nice Cafe. Pretty wicked!

What are you working on?
Currently I’m working on getting all my different bodies of work together to compile a few books. My nude bodies of work need to be gathered and put out more. Online publishing of books, blogs, and my own work is really my main focus right now. I’ve been shooting so much in the last few years, keeping my brain and eyes sharp by opening myself up to new projects, new possibilities, that I now have to purge, show others what I’ve been seeing.

Where can we find your work?
Some of my work can be found online on their respective websites. I have a few large prints hanging at Vancouver Photo Workshops, 14w7th Ave. I have had a studio work live space for the last 6 years, so I used to have a lot of wall space to exhibit work. I’ve participated in The Drift the last two years and plan on continuing. Also I’ve had the series Les Derrieres shown at The Narrow Restaurant. That was an interesting show, bums on display over dinner, they were a large topic of conversation for a while.
