Producer Dan at The Peak 100.5 FM

March 28, 2010

Have you heard our weekly feature on The Peak 100.5 FM that’s been airing over the past few months? It’s on at noon and 6 PM every Sunday and it’s essentially a minute or so where we talk about a couple of the most awesome things in the city each given week.

All of our segments are produced by this guy pictured below, Dan Motut (“Producer Dan”), and I wanted to take a minute to thank Dan for doing such a rad job. Also big thanks to James Sutton and Tamara Stanners over there and of course to The Peak in general just for having us.

CBC VANCOUVER TV 1960

March 28, 2010

The nice folks at the VIFC sent me a screener of this and I admit it’s been a ridiculous week and I haven’t had the time to watch it but if you care anything about the history of broadcasting in Canada, or even if you don’t and you just like history in general, you’re going to love this…

DO NOT ADJUST YOUR SET:
CBC VANCOUVER TV 1960

SUNDAY 28 MARCH: 1.30 and 4.30, $10

It is 1960. CBC TV has been broadcasting in the Lower Mainland since December 1953 under the name CBUT (Channel 2), originally flying in kinescopes from Toronto, but increasingly producing locally-made shows. Turning the dial back 50 years, CBC’s Vancouver archivist Colin Preston will introduce a typical day’s programming from that era, compressed into about an hour and a half.

Our blast from the past includes the popular music series MEET LORRAINE, the 7 O’CLOCK SHOW, HERE AND THERE, children’s programming, and a news bulletin, all with a distinctly local flavour. Come to share your memories of British Columbia television in its infancy, or to catch a rare glimpse of the province as it used to be – in glorious black and white.

BON’S OFF BROADWAY!

March 27, 2010

The bad news is…everything tastes like bacon….the good news is….everything tastes like bacon.  Bon’s rules the cheap breakfast crowd.  What Duffin’s is to donuts, Bon’s is to breakfast.  I hit up the dim sum place next door regularly, but it’s impossible not to check out the crowd outside.  Bon’s is a gathering place.  I only have been a couple times, what amused me the most was the rules or lack there of.  Like Wreck beach, if you’ve never been, you must, so you can at least form an opinion on it….

We’re only going to share the positive ones though here…..seriously….how do you argue w. 2.95?

More cheap breaky!

Rain City Chronicles organizers and their Lucky Charms

March 27, 2010

BY: Lizzy Karp

A wise man once said, “Everything in life is luck.” Thanks Donald Trump. As Karen Pinchin, Elianna Lev and I have been planning for the next Rain City Chronicles [sponsored by V.I.A.! This Monday at the Western Front!], we’ve been thinking about our own lucky charms. To get in the mood for an evening of live storytelling all about luck, here are our own versions of rabbit’s feet, wishbones and horseshoes…

Karen

Apples – I grew up working harvest weekends on my grampy’s fruit farm in Mississauga, Ontario. When things got quiet, I would walk through knee-length grass into the middle, most serene part of the orchard, find a Mutsu or Jonagold apple nearly as big as my head, and munch on it as I laid on my back, staring at the clouds. Ever since then, apples have been my lucky reminder of the importance of hard work and the delicious sweetness of small pleasures.

Paul Simon – On a long, sweaty, emotionally strenuous trip to Kenya with a very dear friend, his Graceland was our lucky album. We would be in an airport gift shop listening to a crackly radio, and it would come on. We would be walking down the streets of a beachside town, and we would hear strains, carried on the wind, from a fabric store. Paul was our lucky charm.

Luck - This may seem redundant. But, without fail throughout my life, at the moment I’ve given up all hope, something outrageously good and unlikely happens and I get catapulted into that giddy aren’t-I-so-special-and-so-very-lucky frame of mind. Then things get better. WAY better. My first real job? Check. My handsome and saintly partner in crime? Check. I could go on…

Brine – It’s really, really hard to screw up roasting a chicken or turkey if you brine it first. When it comes to roasted poultry, I make my own luck.

Lizzy

Sangria- My romantic adventure with my current beau began with this delicious and dangerous summertime potion. In fact, many of my adventures, filled with good luck or bad, have begun with …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>

There’s still time to own that podium

March 27, 2010

I told you I’d be watching the official VANOC Ebay Auction in case anything super awesome came up that I thought you might be interested in, and today I found two things:

1. Quatchi and Miga concept art (it’s a print and not an original, but it’s still really cool)

2. A complete set of volunteer gear so you can pretend like you actually …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>

The Proof – Mike Browne

March 27, 2010

Mike Browne is lover of all things film (especially horror and zombies). Mike is a former grave digger / security guard / graphic artist turned enthusiastic filmmaker. Mike got his start as an actor at the Vancouver Film School where he performed in a number of student productions. He started out working on a variety of low-to-no-budget independent productions in Vancouver, British Columbia in a variety of positions and is moving toward the production of his own feature films.

The Proof

1. My work space at DOXA Documentary Film Festival – The creepy horses wearing shorts were there when I moved in.
2. Poster wall at DOXA – Promo posters for films we’ve screened as well as for the festival itself.
3. Submissions wall at DOXA – Boxes and envelopes from submissions to the festival from all over the world.
4. Caffé Calabria – One of the best coffee shops in town is right across the street from the DOXA offices.
5. My meditation space in the bedroom. First thing every morning I …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>

Dogtown Vancouver: TANNER

March 27, 2010

It’s a new dog every day, click here to find out how to get your dog featured here if you haven’t sent in your photos yet!

Today’s dog featured in Dogtown Vancouver is Tanner, Kelli R’s pup. Here’s what she had to say about him…

NAME: TANNER.
BREED: CHOCOLATE LABRADOR RETRIEVER.
HOOD: YALETOWN.
FAVORITE SNACK: BACON, but he gets more carrots.
OTHER INFO: Tanner’s known as “Superdog” by my friends. He’s obedient, sweet, gentle, polite (yes, polite), and cracks people up. Any dog that makes passers-by smile deserves some credit :).
