GO GIANTS!

April 30, 2010

Being a hockey fan in Vancouver isn’t always easy, some accuse us of being band wagon jumpers, but personally, I’ve always just felt tortured. Which is why I’m somewhat taking the Giants elimination in this years WHL playoff in stride.

While many of us were watching the Canucks finishing off the Kings this year, for once the Giants were the sacrificial lamb of the hockey gods in Vancouver, and I guess they decided one of them had to lose.

Congratulations on another excellent season again Giants…winning the division plus three rounds of playoffs isn’t too shabby…..now let’s see if the city’s other hockey team can do better….

Kitsch – Spring/Summer 2010

April 30, 2010

One of Kitsch Skateboards’ 2010 deck series, designed by the late Nathan Matthews, with proceeds going towards the fight against cancer.

Vancouver’s Kitsch Skateboards is the brain-child of well-known veteran skater Geoff Dermer, who put out the brand’s first run of product in 2007. Kitsch has been going strong ever since, and you’ll find their latest Spring/Summer 2010 run of gear and more right here.

The Tooth Fairy: A Whimsical Puppet Show for All

April 30, 2010

Tonight or tomorrow, make your way to The Cultch to see the Old Trout Puppet Workshop’s original production of The Tooth Fairy.

Kyla Read as Abigail, in The Tooth Fairy

At just over an hour long, the musical puppet show recounts the tale of eight-year-old Abigail (Kyla Read, above) and her gleaming mouthful of perfect teeth. Her grandfather (“He hasn’t got any teeth at all!”) tries desperately to keep Abigail close to home and protected so she’ll never lose her perfect teeth, guaranteeing her a happy and prosperous life. He stands guard over her, keeping the Tooth Fairy away. In this tale, the Tooth Fairy is made out to be the robber of innocence, the overlord who profits from the misery of others.

Thus sets the stage (see what I did there?) for a most wondrous adventure when Abigail decides she must run away to defeat the Tooth Fairy for the good of all.

Puppeteers, The Tooth Fairy

Described as “a children’s puppet show for adults, and adult theatre for children,” audience members of all ages seemed perfectly delighted during the show Tuesday night, myself included. The story is dark, the music is catchy, and the performances of Read and the four puppeteers who create the world she explores on her search for the Tooth Fairy were top-notch.

(Big thanks to The Cultch for inviting me and a guest [my cousin visiting from New York] to see the show opening night.)

Vancouver Outdoor Adventure Show

April 30, 2010

Basically when I heard of the Vancouver Outdoor Adventure Show it meant one thing to me: Mantracker! My brother Blake and I are big Mantracker fans so it was an easy decision to make the trek downtown to meet the man known as Terry Grant.
We had never visited the Vancouver Convention Centre before, but it turned out to be a pretty awesome building. There was lots of open room, a really cool gigantic globe hanging from the ceiling and the single largest elevator ever. We paid our ten dollars and entered a room that led to the show. As we walked into this room we immediately met Mantracker and after getting some photos with the large man we almost left to go back home. Mantracker shakes hands like a real cowboy. Feeling guilty having already paid the ten dollars, we decided we should actually open the door to the show and check it out. It was actually really neat, there was a gun booth, a big pool that had boats in it and a huge line of people waiting to meet Mantracker. We were so happy to have skipped this line. Anyways; Mantracker is actually really cool, as is the event, as is the building, as are the friendly people that helped us find the Canada Line to get home. Vancouver is awesome. I just realized now that we should have hi-fived him…

YOUTH WEEK….SKATE EVENT!

April 29, 2010

I believe that children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty the possess inside. Give them a sense of pride to make it easier. Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be.

Or just let them skateboard…..

It’s come one come all…..whether you’re a kid or not, don’t forget what you’re celebrating though…..da yout!
