April 29, 2010

I ain’t good at writing introductions to people but I will say this – there is a new local talent in town and her name is Sara Brudner. She recently released a video for her new song “My My My” – please check it out and share your thoughts. Would you want to hear more from her? Do you like the song?

Daily Flickr Pickr – Day 178

April 28, 2010

Every day we share a single photo from our Flickr Pool with you, shot by one of our faithful and talented readers (that’s you!).

Today’s photo was shot by Jeff Howard and it reminds me a lot of the view we had when we flew to Salt Spring Island a couple weeks back. Seriously people, you’ve got to get up in a small plane over this city. Write it on your “100 things to do in Vancouver before you die” list.

Hmmm… “100 things to do in Vancouver before you die”, huh? Could be a new V.I.A. feature!

New Momentum Wheels Site…

April 28, 2010

Concrete cover boy and Momentum team rider Morgan Smith helps celebrate the wheel company’s site revamp with some new footy. You can also find Momo’s full-length 2008 video “Un Momentum (Por Favor)” right here.

The Momentum Wheel Co. is a Metro Vancouver-based company that’s been creating its brand of urethane skateboard spheres since 1998. Amongst their product offerings is a line of wheels that has a 25% soy-based compound, and a click around their spankin’ new website is a great way to take a closer look at all the goods. Support local!

Got Craft? Well, Get Some!

April 28, 2010

Twice a year, Andrea Tong-Tucker and Robert Tucker of Lotus Events put on a hoppin’ craft fair called Got Craft? It’s a question with an obvious answer. The answer is: “I’m comin’ to get some this weekend!”

Picture the Royal Canadian Legion hall on The Drive packed full of local crafters peddling their handmade wares. From plush yetis to witty birthday cards, silk-screened shirts to apple cozies, you can stock up on summer birthday presents and get a head start on holiday shopping.

Lines are often out the door (guaranteed so in the morning, as people queue up at the crack of dawn to get one of 30 coveted swag bags), so bring some friends and a cuppa and make a day of it.

Details:
Wicked awesome craft fair
Sunday, 2nd May
10am-5pm
Admission: $2 (kids under ten get in free)
Royal Canadian Legion – 2205 Commercial Drive (@ E. 6th Ave.)

A Mouthful of Awesome

April 28, 2010

There is always time for chocolate.

I stumbled upon this charming little chocolate shop (or “chocolaterie” to the cool kids) and instantly fell in love. Any place that does one thing and manages to do that one thing really well makes me many shades of happy.

Chocolaterie de la Nouvelle France is a nice addition to Main Street. Proprietor Anne-Geneviève Poitras has a background in pastry-making from her native Quebec and opened in Vancouver when she noticed a distinct lack of proper French chocolate in the city, saying she “had to do something about it.” Ask her about what makes her confections so different and her eyes will widen with affection as she discusses cocoa butter mass, properly sourced ingredients and the importance of handmade craftsmanship. It is hard to pay attention as the smell of the store is somewhat distracting, and my eyes kept wandering over to the squares of 72% Venezuelan with chili bean and 66% Mexican with lavender flowers.
