SKATE OR DIE 2: THE SEARCH FOR VANANIMAL CHIN!

May 30, 2010

Do you remember when skateboarding was rad? Like how it used to be? Didn’t it used to be so much better? Not really, skateboarding is, and always will be super fun. At the same time, wearing neon outfits, squeebs, and blasting ‘She Sells Sanctuary’, makes for an enjoyable afternoon, so Kevin Kelly from BLVD decided that it was time for another year’s installment of Skate or Die, ‘The Search for Vananimal Chin’, last weekend.

Siwash Rock, But Not.

May 30, 2010

You know it’s getting summerish (knock on wood we don’t experience the dreaded “Junuary”) when English Bay starts playing host to artisans and vendors along the seawall. Such a wonderful, lively vibe for a Sunday afternoon.

Here’s a safe view of Siwash Rock.

Look, don’t touch.

Local Natives in Technicolor

May 30, 2010

I stumbled upon Local Natives completely by accident. When I went to see Edwarde Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros back in December, my friend and I figured we would get there early and get our stamps to avoid a line, grab dinner close by, and come back right before they took the stage. But as soon as we got stamped we were told “no ins and outs”, to which we weren’t very enthused at the idea of hanging at The Biltmore for three hours. However, when Local Natives opened the show I remember us listening with our mouths open in disbelief glancing at each other occasionally with the silent understanding of “this band rocks”.

SALMON AND BANNOCK!

May 30, 2010

I was probably too busy playing with wrestling dolls or something, but for what ever reason, I’m like the only person in Canada that didn’t try bannock in elementary school. If you are like me, and you have no idea what bannock is, it’s a type of bread eaten by Native Indians. I have no idea how they make it, but after trying it at Salmon and Bannock on Broadway, all I can say is….boy was I missing out.

Adhesif Clothing Company

May 28, 2010

Adhesif is having its grand opening launch party on Saturday, May 29 from 6:00 pm – 11:00 pm! To celebrate their beautiful new space at 2202 Main St. (@ 6th), designer Melissa Ferreira is inviting everyone she knows (and through the magic of the internet, this includes you, dear VIA reader) to partake of the wonderful goodness that is Adhesif. Bring some friends and enjoy homemade treats, drinks, music, art by Anthony Wilson, entertainment by a surprise guest, and 20% off all Adhesif designs.

Melissa is mysterious as she models these one-of-a-kind fingerless mittens. You want them, don’t you?

Though Melissa’s passion for vintage fabric, patterns, and material is entirely self-taught there is no denying her mother’s influence on her. She describes her mother, whose own background as a seamstress has helped shape her vision, as everything from a “confidante to a consultant in terms of design … she knows how to put things together.” As Melissa showed me around her workroom she proudly pointed out an intricately constructed wool coat and broke down some of the fine levels of detail it contained. “This is turn-of-the-century construction and will last you for decades. A lot of designers don’t know how to sew … it boggles my mind.”

Owls abound.

Adhesif embraces sustainability and style, incorporating 50-100% of materials that are recycled – everything from vintage denim, old t-shirts, silk scarves, bolts of fabric, buttons, findings and “bits and ends that just get tossed.” Melissa tells me about the years she spent as a buyer for a popular Vancouver vintage store and describes rummaging through endless piles of discarded textiles housed in massive warehouses not open to the general public. During this time in her life, the eye for style she already had was allowed to develop into a more sophisticated appreciation for her craft. Through hands-on experience she was taught by the people she worked for and learned about, for example, different stitching techniques from other eras. So the question grew into, “how can I mass produce one-of-a-kind clothing?”

And with that came Adhesif.
