If you want to read ugly, bad news about this beautiful city of ours, you’re going to have to look to traditional media and other blogs; V.I.A. promotes everything that makes our city awesome, from old to new and everything inbetween. We’re like the human interest piece on the news… only different.

Daily Flickr Pickr – Day 192

May 28, 2010

Every day we share a single photo from our Flickr Pool with you, shot by one of our faithful and talented readers (that’s you!). Today’s photo was shot by Jamil Rhajiak.

Have you seen this blue whale skeleton at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum at UBC? Woah. More whales in the city!

The golden billboard is apparently the first of its kind anywhere in the world and it took four weeks of work by Canada’s top gilder, Brian Dedora, to construct. It’s only going to be up for 2 more days so get down there if you want to have a glance, and be sure to say hi to the 24 hour security guard…

UNPLUGGED: #4 ALICE LAKE

May 28, 2010

PLACE: Alice Lake Provincial Park (CLICK FOR MAP)

LOCATION: Brackendale, B.C.

“A lake is the landscape’s most beautiful and expressive feature. It is Earth’s eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.”

-Henry David Thoreau, Walden

One of the benefits I receive from the act of shooting UNPLUGGED for VIA is the near-meditative healing qualities these locales have on my being. Interestingly, this is actually a reflection on how I see Vancouver and her residents in general. We work extremely hard at being creative, productive, unique individuals during the week and as a result often escape to all of what our beautiful natural surroundings have to offer on the weekends. Our environment affords us a healthy escape from the hyper-productivity of the work week and an opportunity reflect, reset and recharge.

As a location for reflective contemplation – or a family camping trip, great hiking and some fly fishing for that matter – Alice Lake Provincial Park is certainly a place that helps to make Vancouver Awesome!

7 reasons to come to our show, A Night at MOV, on Friday May 28th
Reason #6: Partial proceeds go to keeping V.I.A. afloat

May 27, 2010

In the 7 days leading up to our inaugural A Night at MOV talk show at the Museum Of Vancouver (learn about it HERE), I’m giving you 7 reasons why you should attend.

REASON #6:
BECAUSE YOU WANT TO SUPPORT VANCOUVER IS AWESOME! Yes, V.I.A. is an incorporated not-for-profit organization dedicated to spreading a positive message about this city and the arts and culture fostered within it, and this is the first event of this scale that we’ve produced. We’ve been working on it for months and have partnered with the Museum to develop this night (and more in the future) with portions of the proceeds going into our yearly operating budget. We do not receive grants, we are not funded by the city in any capacity, and we must enterprise to raise most of the money we require to continue to bring you all of the awesome news that we do, day after day, month after month. The event is well worth the price and we’re not calling it a fundraiser but essentially it is, so feel good about buying that ticket!

The Ride To Conquer Cancer Fundraiser w/ DJ Sega

May 27, 2010

This coming June is the annual 2-day Ride to Conquer Cancer cycling event. Livestock has put together a team of 8 people from around the industry to participate: Garry Bone (Livestock), Matty Farr (Adidas), Mike Medland (Oakley), Jon Coleman (Simpl marketing), Emily Jenkins (SFU), Dylan Doubt (Color Magazine), Emanuel Krebs (thoughtpatterns.ca) and Kenta Goto (Write-Left, Brknhome). We’ll be cycling from Vancouver to Seattle along with a couple thousand other riders. All the proceeds will go to BC Cancer Foundation to support cancer research, treatment, and services. BC Cancer Foundation is a leading comprehensive institution devoted to cancer research and care, and the work they’re doing is cutting-edge.

As a team, they have commit to raising $22,800.00. We invite you to join us at Fortune Sound Club to support their main fundraising event this Friday, May 28th 2010 with MAD DECENT’S DJ SEGA and supported by Livestock family RICO UNO, BUTTER, MILA and GENIE. Your $10.00 minimum donation will be the best money you ever spent!

100% of the $10 tickets will be donated to the cause and will be available from Livestock West 4th, Gastown (www.deadstock.ca) and anyone of the LS cycling team. More info HERE.

Daily Flickr Pickr – Day 191

May 27, 2010

Every day we share a single photo from our Flickr Pool with you, shot by one of our faithful and talented readers (that’s you!). Today’s photo was shot by Carson Ting.

Have you driven/walked/biked past this billboard that’s on West 4th near Granville Island yet? It’s actually covered in real 22 karat gold, pounded down from a mere 2 ounces! It’s an ad for Science World’s latest summer exhibit, Treasure!, which opened May 7 at the TELUS World of Science.

Dialup

May 27, 2010

I was digging through our web stats yesterday and was slightly dumbfounded to learn that in the last 30 days, 400 different visitors to VancouverIsAwesome.com were on dialup connections. FOUR HUNDRED! That’s rad. I get so caught up in my wireless superhyper connection, tapping my fingers if it takes a minute to download a 10MB file, that I didn’t even think that dialup was still an option.

Also, luckily for me (and this post) I found this 28800 modem at a garage sale a couple weekends back and had to take a photo of it. I was thinking “Who on earth would buy that?” and now I guess I know: 400 V.I.A. readers! If you’re reading this post from a dialup connection please do say hello in the comments.
