They were playing at the launch party for this year's Peak Performance Project on Saturday that I attended along with our Indie Music editor, Christine Mcavoy, who I imagine will be sharing some much better pics of the night with you later this week. The contest kicked off on Saturday and you can rest assured that we're going to be bringing you even more in-depth coverage of it than we did last year. Click HERE to check out all 20 of the acts that will be participating in this year's Project and stay tuned for more on each of them in the coming months.

The Peak Performance Project isn't simply a contest but is an amazing initiative to help foster BC music talent, headed up by the totally awesome folks at The Peak 100.5 FM and brought to life by Music BC.

The official word:

Year two of The PEAK Performance Project will see an increase of overall funding to B.C. artists from $275,000 to $315,000 in development cash awards and will see all Top 20 artists receive artist development funding. The 1st place artist will receive $100,500, 2nd is $75,000, 3rd is $50,000, 4th is $10,000, 5th is $5,000 and all 20 finalists will receive $3500 each in initial artists development funding. In addition to this, all of this year’s 20 finalists will receive a showcase spot at The Kelowna 2010 BreakOut West Festival presented by the Western Canadian Music Alliance October 21–24, 2010.

The Top 20 Artists will be announced on May 31st followed by the PEAK Performance Orientation (June 12, 2010), Bootcamp (August 27–Sept 3, 2010) and the PEAK Performance Concert Series (Sept–Oct 2010). The final three artists will be announced on November 1st followed by the final showcase and the crowing of the ultimate PEAK performer in late November at the Commodore Ballroom, Vancouver.

The $5.29 million PEAK Performance Project is designed to educate, promote, develop and hopefully launch the careers of some of British Columbia’s top emerging artists. It also hopes to foster the province’s music industry and create a sense of community amongst music professionals. In addition to the rigorous six month artist development program and the $315,000.00 in artist development funding, The Pattison Group of Companies will also contribute an annual media credit of $1,000,000.00 in support of the PEAK Performance Project by marketing, promoting and advertising the PEAK Performance Project and the participating artists making it the largest individual radio station project in Canada.

The PEAK Summit

Each selected artist’s sound recordings will be added to the PEAK and Music BC websites. The public will be engaged to vote on their favorite recordings over a several week period. The results of the public voting will also be considered by the judging committee along with the artist’s performance throughout the program to determine the top artists.
