Pecha Kucha Night Presents the Green Giveaway

POSTED June 16, 2010 BY Rachel Fox
Tweet

Tickets to Pecha Kucha Night, drinks at Chambar, a water saving kit and music from Christopher Smith!

Bob has written lots on Pecha Kucha (and even presented!) before. It’s one of those events I have heard nothing but good things about and always wanted to attend but haven’t yet – usually because it sells out. If you’re not in the loop, it’s pronounced PEH-CHA KOO-CHA, and the very special green-themed edition on Wednesday, June 23 “will feature 13 local instigators that are on stage with 20 slides x 20 seconds to deliver inspiration and insight on the broad topic of sustainability and Vancouver’s ambition to be the greenest city by 2020.”

Tickets are $10 so if you are keen to go, it may be a good idea to purchase them now because the inspiring line-up – including Ken Lum, the artist behind that incredible East Van Cross and Ernesto Gomez, founder of Nuba – is likely to ensure a sell-out event.

Christopher Smith’s debut album, The Beckon Call.

Vancouver is Awesome has three sets of this fabulous giveaway to … giveaway. (Which means that your odds are good. Better than normal, anyway.) Each winner receives two tickets to the event on Thursday, June 23 as well as a $20 coupon courtesy of Chambar, two water saving kits and two copies of Christopher Smith‘s The Beckon Call!

I could definitely use a water-saving kit.

Personally, I feel like I am really conscious about and aware of recycling. I rinse (regardless of how foul and moldy the contents may be) jars and containers for the blue box and cringe when I see recyclable containers in the garbage. I will admit that I (more than occasionally) do indulge in two showers a day, which is totally unnecessary and undoubtedly wasteful.

To enter, please leave a comment below detailing one good and one not-so-good thing you do in relation to the environment. Enter as many times as you like. Contest closes on Monday, June 21 at 5:00 pm. Winners will be picked at random and contacted via email for confirmation.

Good luck!

Good: My bike is my main mode of transportation, and I’m helping to organize Car Free Vancouver Day on Main!

Not-so-good: I pass out on the couch a lot. Read: The TV and lights are left on all night a lot.

  • rob

Not so good thing? I don’t recycle the cardboard toilet paper rolls. :|

  • Christopher

One good thing I do for the environment is swapping out every light bulb in my house for energy efficient LED’s from Philips. The not-so-good thing is that I usually leave all of the accent lighting on for aesthetics sake, even when I’m not at home :\

  • rob

Oops forgot my good thing. I am very strict about turn off lights and heat when they’re not needed.

  • K8ieT

We bring our own grocery bags everywhere now. It took some getting used to but now we barely ever forget them. On the negative side, I could definitely have shorter showers.

  • K8ieT

Something else we do good for the environment is we have an electric blanket that we turn on (just for a little bit to warm up) if we need a quick boost of heat on cold nights, instead of turning up the heat in the whole house and leaving it on all night. The bag thing is that I’ve become so addicted to it that I sometimes use it when its not really necessary. Even still I think it still nets out positive.

  • http://www.rachelpickphotography.com Rachel

On the plus side, we’ve been planting a veg garden the last 3 years – growing more and more of our own local & organic food each year. On the minus side – we could be reducing our garbage by over 50% if we could start a composting program at our townhouse complex.

  • Kathryn

Good: I walk everywhere I can.
Not So Good: I am a sucker for long hot showers.

  • Karey

One good thing I do for the environment is bike ride to work instead of drive and one bad thing is running the tap to wash dishes after a meal instead of just filling the sink to do so.

  • parker!

on the good: I take transit and plan to rollerskate home on the nice evenings!

on the bad: I run cold and like to have the heat on

  • John

Good: I limit my showers to under four minutes a day

Bad: I still buy foods with far too much packaging.

  • http://www.postgradhaircut.blogspot.com Samantha

I definitely spend way too long in the shower. I love water and unfortunately lack a personal swimming pool (or I suppose fortunately, again for the environment), so that is where I get my fill.

I take transit or walk pretty much everywhere I go and since our building doesn’t have a container recycling bin (silly building), I sneakily go across the alley to the neighbours and recycle there! I don’t know if that’s a good thing to admit, but there you go.

  • Lindsay

Good: I take transit to work and bike to the grocery store

Bad: I continue to buy overly packaged foods and foods that come from half way around the world

  • Peggy

Good: My main modes of travel are transit, bike and walking. Bad: I am flying to New York this summer.

  • Matthew M

another transit/bike ride when i can person.
