If you want to read ugly, bad news about this beautiful city of ours, you’re going to have to look to traditional media and other blogs; V.I.A. promotes everything that makes our city awesome, from old to new and everything inbetween. We’re like the human interest piece on the news… only different.

52 Weeks of ‘East Van Cats’ – WEEK 38

June 28, 2010

The cats rule East Vancouver. They’re everywhere…sidewalks, roads, hiding in doorways, supervising stores, sprawled out anywhere to have a bath. The cats I meet while wandering through East Van are probably all house-pets but it’s not clear who ‘owns’ them. Cats are all about territory, but all space is public to them.

Stay tuned…When the project is finished I hope to have photographed every one of the East Van Cats!

Canada Day Jamboree… and soccer

June 28, 2010

Canada Day is right around the corner (this Thursday!), and if you’re staying in town you should most definitely pay a visit to Strathcona park for the third annual Canada Day Jamboree! Music, food, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament sponsored by Livestock with a $500 prize…

Oh, and the Vancouver is Awesome FC is welcoming all challengers in the V.I.A. SOCCER CHALLENGE. Basically what this means is that a bunch of us are coming, we’re bringing a soccer ball and we’ll be kicking it around and it would be great if you wanted to play with or against us. It’s just gonna be a really fun day. HERE is all the info. Come on down, it’s FREE!

Daily Flickr Pickr – Day 212

June 28, 2010

Every day we share a single photo from our Flickr Pool shot by one of our faithful and talented readers (that’s you!). Today’s photo was taken by Carlos Lavara and as there’s been some buzzing about a V.I.A. book club as of late I figured it fitting. Of course if and when we launch a book club we probably won’t be recommending 4736 pages of Winston Churchill, but still fitting.

Mini Minivan

June 28, 2010

I saw this mini minivan just off of Main Street not long ago (see the scooter parked in front for size reference), and it was FOR SALE! It’s not as great as the classic 90′s Nautica Minivan we shared with you awhile back, so I’m holding back from buying it.

START YOUR WEEK RIGHT WITH THE V.I.A. WEEKLY PLAYLIST
WEEK 22 – Jody Glenham

June 28, 2010

With 22,245 artists, boasting 98,850 tracks, the CBC Radio 3 web site is the absolute ultimate authority, and the home, of independent music in Canada. With that massive library along with tools for members (free to join!), we’re taking advantage of what they’ve set up by bringing you a fresh batch of music every week featuring local groups who have tracks (entire albums, even!) on the R3 site.

This week we’re proud to bring you a guest playlist put together by Vancouver’s Jody Glenham who will be playing a show at Guilt & Company with Gene Burton on bass and Al Boyle on drums this Friday at 10:00PM.

Click below to listen to her favourite songs from Vancouver artists…

UNPLUGGED HIJACK! QUARRY ROCK!

June 27, 2010

I would never claim to be a hiker, I take the dog for a walk in the woods all the time, used to do the Grouse Grind alot, to me though that doesn’t make me a hiker, that just makes me a pretty typical Vancouverite.

A few weeks back, I was looking for a good excuse to spend some time in Deep Cove, I hate driving all that way for just a donut, so I did some poking around on VANCOUVER TRAILS website and came across Quarry Rock! This was perfect for a novice hiker like me….it’s pretty lightweight. Just enough hiking to work up an appetite.

Know Your ABCs: Antony, Bard, Cleopatra

June 27, 2010

Tickets to Antony and Cleopatra and dinner at Hell’s Kitchen. Have you entered?

Vancouver is Awesome
has two sets of passes to Antony and Cleopatra and two $50 gift certificates to Hell’s Kitchen to give away. Statistically speaking, your odds of winning are pretty good. But you have to be in it to win it.

If you haven’t entered yet, you should. If you have entered, then you may want to increase your odds and do it some more.

Carpe diem, people!

Alley Finds

June 27, 2010

I hate the shape of leather couches with fat arm rests. So 80s. I’d leave it in the alley, too. Blech.

What began as a neato series from the mind of Jef has now taken root in my brain and become (another) minor obsession. I find myself noticing things in my alley a lot more now… and have yet to decide if this is a good thing or a bad thing. At the very least I know I’m not alone when it comes to highjacking posts.

From Best Picture in 1978 to an alley find today. The Deer Hunter… on VHS!
