Katzenjammer at the Commodore

June 27, 2010

Graeme Foote photo.

Norwegian power-pop quartet Katzenjammer brought their brand of circus-like musical chaos to the Commodore Ballroom on June 25 as part of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival. The ladies (Anne Marit, Marianne, Solveig and Turid) describe themselves as “queens of sultry sound, sisters of mercy, saints of scarred souls, society’s hangover and Calamity Jane’s hangover” and are an extraordinarily dynamic group, playing more than 15 different instruments on stage between them.

As my friend so succinctly surmised, “Those girls can really play.”

200 artists. 400 pieces of art. $200 each. TONIGHT!

June 26, 2010
The Cheaper Show #9 happens tonight! In case you’re unfamiliar, here’s the deal:

200 artists. 400 pieces of art. $200 each.

I went to the media preview and I have to tell you, you’re in for an amazing show this evening. It’s staggering really, how much artwork is on the walls of that massive space that was once Storyeum. They spent weeks getting it ready for you for tonight’s one night show and to kick it all off our mayor declared this day, June 26th, Cheaper Show Day in Vancouver! Here he is pictured handing over the official declaration to Cheaper Show founder, Graeme Berglund.

I’ve been telling you this for the past 24 days but I must say it again: DON’T MISS IT!

Dogtown Vancouver: Iris

June 26, 2010

It’s a new dog every day, click here to find out how to get your dog featured here if you haven’t sent in your photos yet!

Today’s dog featured in Dogtown Vancouver is Iris, Christina P’s pup. Here’s what she had to say about her…

NAME: Iris.
BREED: Australian Shepherd/Border Collie X (to the best of anyone’s knowledge).
HOOD: South Granville.
FAVORITE SNACK: Cheese.
OTHER INFO: Iris is a rescue dog from Idaho. She was supposed to euthanized on August 21, 2009 but kind volunteers transported her and three other little unwanted buddies up to Vancouver where they were all successfully adopted. August 21st is now officially known as her “rebirth-day”.

Iris would like you to consider adopting an unwanted dog from the SPCA or from a rescue group instead of purchasing a puppy from a breeder. Retrain, Rehab, Rehome!

Below are pictures of Iris having fully assimilated into the Vancouver lifestyle. She is shown: 1) romping at Spanish Banks at low tide, 2) lounging at home with her human and, 3) enjoying a little after-coffee foam.
