Trout Lake Farmer’s Market

June 25, 2010

One of the best things about Vancouver in the summer has got to be heading over to one of the Farmer’s Markets on a sunny day to figure out what’s for dinner based on what catches your eye. I finally made it out to the Trout Lake Market for the first time this season and it did not disappoint. If you haven’t been yet you need to go. It’s the mother of all Farmer’s Markets. (And they even have freebies – have you seen this poster? Pretty cool.)

Sea asparagus harvested from the Sunshine Coast.

The first thing I saw that caught my eye was this sea asparagus. I’ve seen it before while kayaking but never thought you could eat it. I ended up buying some – fantastic! It has a stronger, more “vegetable” taste than regular asparagus and a slight salty sharpness to it. I bought some fresh morels to go along with…

Scale model of the new BC Place

June 25, 2010

I love scale models. Love scale models. Not enough that I actually own any scale models of my own but there’s something appealing about tiny versions of massive things. Like the new BC Place, for example. When I was at the press conference for the announcement of the new Whitecaps brand they had set up this futuristic display booth thing with this scale model in it. I don’t imagine they’d build the booth for a single press conference so keep your eyes peeled for this thing popping up at Whitecaps and Lions related events and stuff in the coming months…

UNPLUGGED: Gone Fishing

June 25, 2010

I am here to report that… well … I am not here. As you read this I will be crossing a logging road somewhere in the Thompson-Okanagan region on my way to much needed extended UNPLUGGED adventure. You can look forward to some pics next week but until then enjoy this shot of Indian Arm.

Peace!

U-Pick Strawberries!

June 25, 2010

Believe it or not Vancouverites have only one to two weeks left to hit up local strawberry u-pick fields! Last weekend I paid only $2.00/lb which is a lot cheaper than the grocery store and you can easily pick a few pounds in a matter of minutes. Not to mention, local berries put those weird, massive, tasteless California “strawberries” to shame! Bring a container (plastic bags not allowed) to collect your berry pickings in. They’ll weigh it before you start and then deduct it when you pay. Most places are cash only. Click here for a map of Fraser Valley Strawberry farms. Call ahead to confirm u-pick availability.

Chin Stayin Busy

June 24, 2010

Chin Injeti has been doing things. Co-producing tracks for Clipse, 50 Cent and Drake of late, he’s also found time to hook up with K’naan et al in Wavin Flag and also releasing his own album D’Tach just recently. Now his work appears on the new Eminem album Road to Recovery.

From Indoor Recess press release via Jeff Herrera from the Hastings Set: “On Recovery, Chin shares writing and performance credits on the tracks “Almost Famous” and “Talkin’ 2 Myself” and also contributed to the production of “Talkin’ 2 Myself” which features Kobe. Both tracks were produced by his L.A. based production partner DJ Khalil.
In addition to this, Chin’s group The New Royales (along with DJ Khalil, Liz Rodrigues and Erik Alcock) also made major contributions with production, performing and writing on two other Eminem’s songs: “25 to Life” and “Won’t Back Down” featuring Pink.”

Below is Chin (in recording booth) and Khalil (on computer) working on Almost Famous.

ANOTHER REASON TO GET A LIBRARY CARD: THE SEYLYNN STORY

June 24, 2010

Another fine pick courtesy of the BPL, George Faulkner’s ‘The Seylynn Story’ tells about one of the oldest skateboard parks in the world which just happens to be located in North Vancouver.

George has done an masterful job compiling hundreds of photos and hours of footage to document the bowl over the years. In interviewing the designer of the bowl he shows that it is not only is a skatepark, but a sculpture and a science project. If you’ve never been to the bowl, the kick off to the bowl series on Canada day might be time to do it.

If you’d like more info on the documentary, or would like to buy a copy info is here.

BPL ain’t….
