The Proof - Pamela Rounis

A maven of music, a food snob and a stickler when it comes to good design, those of us privileged to know Pam regard her as a passionate, fascinating person.

A maven of music, a food snob and a stickler when it comes to good design, those of us privileged to know Pam regard her as a passionate, fascinating person. She’s a multi-faceted creative type crossed with a pun-loving ham, which makes for one delightful friend. Pam is also an emerging communication designer, recently graduated from the IDEA program at Capilano University and, not so recently, from Emily Carr University. She’s sickeningly talented and surely destined for greatness.

Pamela Rounis Proof

The Proof

1} Triple word whore – I love love love scrabble. This picture was actually taken in a gallery in Chelsea, NYC and that’s a painting! (and that’s me pretending to play…such a tourist!)

2} Midnight Cat the Oasis – This is my cat Bijou caught in the act – filling up before micturating on something, I’m sure.

3} Oh snap – I recently participated in a photo shoot for Lions Gate Hospital. That’s me getting my photo taken by photographer and all-around creative guy, Gabriel Hall .

4} Polyphonic Fannypack – Lately I’ve been obsessed with 8tracks.com, it’s this site where you can listen to and share music mixes. Recently, I got the opportunity to participate in a real-life mix cd swap with 26 other people and this is the mix I made for them. You can hear some of my other mixes at www.8tracks.com/PAR

5} Francis – This is my guitar, Francis. It was my Dad’s from the 70’s. It just sat unused for the longest time so when I moved to Vancouver about 6 years ago I decided to take it with me and finally learn to play. I took it to get the bridge repaired and when I went to pick it up they said they couldn’t tell which guitar was mine for about a week because the tag fell off. Finally they noticed where a young, mischievous Pamela had carved her name in the bottom. I have no recollection of doing this but I suppose I’m glad I did! Anyway, I named her Francis after Black Francis; I finally did learn to play covering Frank Black and Pixies stuff so it seemed fitting. I don’t really have any chops to speak of but I’m working on it!

6} Vintage Vancouver – A couple of years ago my Grandpa was rooting around his closet and found an old camera. Turns out there was still film in it and this was one of the photos in the roll. That’s my uncle, mom and grandma before the Vancouver skyline about 40 years ago, classic!

7} You had me at Oy Vey – Some fellow IDEA grads and I are working on design concepts for the Vancouver Jewish Film Festival. These are just some of my initial sketches and brainstorming lists.

8} Hot Seat* – I found a set of these fantastic chairs on the side of the road! I caught them out of the corner of my eye while driving and just had to turn around and rescue them. I’m in the process of sanding and staining them, according to their undersides they were fabricated in Toronto by Zest Furniture! Muy Caliente!

*Bijou insisted on being in the photo, I tried to shoo her but it didn’t take.

The Questions

What neighborhood do you live in?

I live in the Fairview / South Granville area. It’s chock-full of snobs so, I fit right in. I really like it but it’s changed so much since I moved here. They’ve replaced the Normandy, the butcher, the bakery and bodegas with all these clothing stores…don’t get me wrong, I love clothes, but you can’t eat your pants.

What do you do and where?

I am a communication designer / dilettante. I recently graduated from the IDEA program, since then I've been busying myself with freelance work and am just finishing up an internship with Fjord West (Cossette).

What are you working on?

I’m working on the new identity for the Vancouver Jewish Film Festival and I’m going to be doing some book covers for local small business advocate Roy Prevost.
