18 pounds of gold!

So this is pretty much the most ridiculously awesome thing in the city right now. And by right now I mean tomorrow, Saturday August 21, 2010 between 11AM and 3PM at Science World. It's a 1.

So this is pretty much the most ridiculously awesome thing in the city right now. And by right now I mean tomorrow, Saturday August 21, 2010 between 11AM and 3PM at Science World.

It's a 1.5 million dollar golden eagle and it was constructed by a treasure hunter dude by the name of Ron Shore. Originally from Abbotsford, Ron's been treasure hunting since childhood and he created The World’s Greatest Treasure Hunt (www.GreatHunt.com) to meet a goal of raising 100 million dollars for the Hunt for the Cause Foundation, which seeks to raise funds for research for the prevention, early detection and cure for breast cancer. Shore worked with Canadian artist and sculptor Kevin Peters to create his Golden Eagle in the spirit of the Fabergé Egg with a hint of Damien Hirst's skull.

The official word is that...

The Golden Eagle is composed of 18 pounds of solid gold. It is adorned with 763 diamonds, two 1.1 karat pear shaped diamonds as eyes, and is overlooking the Atocha Star Emerald. At 12.73 karats, the Atocha Star Emerald is the largest cut emerald from the Atocha ship wreck which sank in 1622, and was discovered by Mel Fisher in 1985. The emerald itself sat at the bottom of the ocean floor for almost 400 years before becoming part of Mel Fisher’s treasure legacy. The Golden Eagle is one of the ten largest solid gold statues created in the last 500 years.

Already gold bars from Mel Fisher’s treasure legacy are on display as part of the Treasure! exhibition at TELUS World of Science. Treasure! is on display until September 6, 2010.

Ron Shore will be available for book signing of The World’s Greatest Treasure Hunt: Quest for the Golden Eagle during his visit. For more information or to purchase the book The World’s Greatest Treasure Hunt please visit www.GreatHunt.com.
