WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SALMON FEVER HITS STEVESTON!

August 30, 2010

Growing up in Steveston, the one place you  never went to buy fish was the docks.  This seems backwards now, but back then fishing was such a big part of the community that everyone knew someone that could hook them up.  Those days are over so,  even people like me are sniffing around the dock for a deal.  Looks like you don’t need a boat to be part of the frenzy.

Price check?  $25/fish not gutted…..Man are we ever lucky, this is the most epic run ever, but I’m holding out, the river is open again so there’s more coming!fo

Rain City Chronicles on Two Wheels

August 30, 2010

Rain City Chronicles

On a sunny August afternoon, with a hint of fall in the air, the Rain City Chronicles embarked on our first Bike Ticket Delivery Service. For those who pre-ordered their tickets to our Olio Festival Show on September 24th Karen and I hand delivered them, zipping through the streets of Vancouver on two-wheels. (Read below to see our short photo diary). The day was such a success we will be doing another one on Sunday, September 12th. You can order tickets by contacting us here or message us on Twitter @raincityvan. And stay tuned… after the holiday weekend we will be announcing our line-up as well as having a few ticket giveaways!

Daily Flickr Pickr – Day 243

August 30, 2010

Every day we share a single photo from our Flickr Pool shot by one of our faithful and talented readers (that’s you!). Today’s photo was taken by our friend Dano Pendygrasse, it’s called “Preparing for flight” and the caption is “Fall is coming and the geese are testing out their flight patterns.”.

Nicholson Road Week 5 – Douglas, Surrey

August 30, 2010
Nicholson Road is part of a daily photo project aimed at sharing and celebrating the different communities in Metro Vancouver. Each week Vancouver Is Awesome will be featuring one of the most engaging photos from the project in order to draw your attention a little bit outside of the hyper-focus that we usually have on the city of Vancouver.

Metro Vancouver Is Awesome, and you should get out and explore it!

The grand, white, Peace Arch on the international boundary between Blaine, WA and Surrey, BC, was built in 1921 to commemorate the centennial of the signing of the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812. Did you know the corners and edges were lined with about 470 lights until they were removed in the 50′s? And did you also know it’s considered one of the first earthquake-proof structures in North America? Now you know!

The Peace Arch, at Peace Arch Provincial Park, in Douglas, Surrey.

More from Nicholson Road can be found HERE.

START YOUR WEEK RIGHT WITH THE V.I.A. WEEKLY PLAYLIST
WEEK 31 – Kuba Oms

August 30, 2010
sceneandheard
SCENE AND HEARD showcases the independent music scene here in Vancouver.

With 22,376 artists, boasting 99,212 tracks, the CBC Radio 3 web site is the absolute ultimate authority, and the home, of independent music in Canada. With that massive library along with tools for members (free to join!), we’re taking advantage of what they’ve set up by bringing you a fresh batch of music every week featuring local groups who have tracks (entire albums, even!) on the R3 site.

As a Peak Performance Project top 20 finalist, Kuba Oms has a busy few months ahead of him. On top of that he’s headlining a stage at Live At Squamish this Labour Day weekend and is currently up at “bootcamp” with the rest of the PPP. It’s likely you’ll hear his name often in the coming months, and right now you can hear Kuba’s playlist of Vancouver artists…so click the photos below!

Guy Eats 20 Bowls of Cereal

August 30, 2010

I’m not going to lie, I had a favourite artist in the Peak Performance Project the day round 2 launched, and his name is Aidan Knight. I haven’t yet heard most of the other 19 artists’ music (aside from Said The Whale who are my very, very, very close second right now) and this could change but Aidan’s Versicolour album has been on heavy rotation in my life for a few months now.

Not only is Aidan vying for $100,500 in the Peak Performance Project over the next few months (and currently at P3 Boot Camp) but he’s attempting to break a world record in this video below. Watch and see how he fares…

Also, how good is the The City We Are / Yoda t-shirt he’s wearing?

A Zipcar fishing adventure in five parts
Part one: the whip!

August 30, 2010

Recently Zipcar reached out and offered me a credit so that I could try out their service and write about it here on the blog. As somebody who owns a car and hasn’t ever considered joining a carshare, I admit I was initially lukewarm to the idea. But then it hit me: fishing! Sure if you don’t own a vehicle being a Zipcar member offers a simple and quick way to essentially rent a car short-term (and to tread lightly while you’re at it) but if you do own a vehicle that’s a little on the… well… gutless side and you have some heavy lifting/moving to do or a destination that’s at the end of a steep dirt road then they have small trucks and SUVs in their fleet. So I took them up on the offer.

And of course I don’t go fishing by myself, so I brought along my friends Suede Peterson and musician Rob Butterfield. This week I’m sharing five parts of the Zipcar fishing adventure that we went on.

In this first part I’m introducing you to the whip: Coray (all Zipcars have human names) is an almost new Honda CR-V that lives at Commercial and 11th, and in a word I would describe the actual experience of driving him as sweet.

Essentials about to be loaded. Yes that’s a roll of emergency toilet paper and no that’s not an actual rifle, it’s a bb gun.

Coray looking pretty at a roadside fruitstand, halfway to the lake.
