34 Million

POSTED September 1, 2010 BY Bob Kronbauer

Nope, it’s not the Lotto 649 growing and growing, it’s those pesky and glorious sockeye salmon making their way up the Mighty Fraser River this year! Up from a concerning 1.5 million in last year’s run, the first estimate was 25 million, then it was 30 million, and now it’s climbed to 34 freakin’ million. Take it easy, fish! Wowzers.

anyone have suggestions of where to go to see all of this? I am guessing the bald eagles and other animals are going nuts. Where to go to see it??

  • Rachel Fox

Bob, I am thinking your love for the fishies is making them multiply. Like Gremlins, but without the massive destruction.

  • http://www.bobkronbauer.com Bob Kronbauer

    parker,

We went down to the Fraser on Friday, just around Marpole, for a walk with the hopes of perhaps seeing a couple jumping (as they make their way from the ocean to freshwater they shake the loosening sea lice off… weird but true). There were a bunch of people fishing from shore but the river is so huge by the time it gets that close to the ocean that there’s not much to see.

Once the fish get closer to their birthplace, higher up the river and into it’s tributaries where they’ll spawn, then the water flow gets smaller and you can actually see the fish. TONS OF THEM! The first three weeks in October at the Adams River in the Okanagan are insane, the river is just full of them. I went when I was a kid and will be going back this year. I’ll make a blog post about it, tying it back to Vancouver so I can justify sharing it here! ;)

Here’s a Youtube video somebody made of the 2002 run which was only 3.6 million. This run will be TEN TIMES THE SIZE OF THE ONE IN THIS VIDEO!!! ffwd halfway through to see the fishies…

awesome, thanks Bob! I’m going to book some time off just for this. I don’t want to miss my chance to see all of this.

  • http://www.bobkronbauer.com Bob Kronbauer

Cool. The Adams River is arguably the best place to witness this once in a lifetime thing but I would do some research if I were you and ask around.

I’m not religious but it’s seriously biblical when you see a really big salmon run, you’re there and it just doesn’t seem like it could be possible.

  • parker

Sounds like when I go whale watching – I’ve had good luck with this and it is a complete religious experience when I have the chance to witness such an amazing creature in its element.

Basically blows my mind. And I’m looking forward to the same with the salmon.

I’ll definitely do my homework and may try out a different place so we can compare salmon notes!

  • http://www.bobkronbauer.com Bob Kronbauer

Cool. I have a feeling you’re going to come up with Adams River a lot but I’m sure there are other places that are similarly amazing.

You’re really not going to believe your eyes when you see it. I’m trying to dig up a photo of myself from the 80′s here, the last time I visited the run…

  • tim

Thx Bob, I think I know what short vacation I’ll be taking in October this year.

  • parker

    maybe a VIA roadtrip??

  • http://www.bobkronbauer.com Bob Kronbauer

    Cool idea! How though?

    Also, check this out:

“Struggling against insurmountable odds, 1 out of every four thousand eggs laid in the Adams River lives to return to the Adams River as a spawning adult. Experience the majesty, beauty and tragically poignant life of the Pacific Sockeye Salmon; attend the 2010 Salute to the Sockeye celebration at Roderick Haig Brown Park, October 2-24, 2010 in British Columbia’s Scenic Shuswap Region.”

    From here:
    http://www.salmonsociety.com/

All the info you need about getting to the Adams River and this epic run.

  • parker

apparently, Coquitlam River / Coquitlam Lake is an potential option too. I’ve sent an email to some folks over there to see.

It won’t be nearly as impressive as Adams River, but it is closer.

I’ll let you know what I find out.

  • http://www.bobkronbauer.com Bob Kronbauer

Cool, we could organize a day trip out there. Email me when you hear back!

  • http://www.bobkronbauer.com Bob Kronbauer

But I also still think you should hit the Adams River one. I’m not missing it for anything.
