Makeover Madness at Barbarella

POSTED September 3, 2010 BY Rachel Fox

Get Pretty, Pretty with A Cut and Colour at Barbarella Saloon

If you see girls (and boys) with great hair in or around the South Main St. area, there’s a good chance they’ve had their hair did at neighbourhood mainstay Barbarella, a fun and quirky saloon known for its friendly, creative stylists and funky interior. At the ripe old age of eleven, the fiercely-coiffed Barbarella is about to welcome a second location at the newly renovated Waldorf Hotel which is re-launching next month.

Here’s a chance to get Barbarellified yourself with the lovely and talented Candice. Say hello to fall with a cut and colour, baby.

“Hello, pretty pretty.”

I have had a few really terrible cuts in my life. The first was when my mother “surprised” me with a trip to the man-with-the-scissors, leaving me with a bowl cut and my long tresses on the floor (I was five and still carry scars). Then I cut my own bangs … Bad Idea City! Then somewhere in the mid-90s I was rocking some very “frosty” highlights; you remember – the kind with the cap and they pull your hair through the holes? Good times indeed.

Get a fabulous fresh start this fall with a courtesy cut and colour with Candice. What was the worst ‘do you rocked and how much do you need a makeover? Leave your comment here to enter. But, if you are really keen to win then leave a comment and send along a photo of your troubled mane to missfox@vancouverisawesome.com. Your photo will not be published, but it may help your cut and colour chances of winning. (Just sayin’.)

Here’s the deal:
Whomever wins this amazing prize must be open to being featured on Vancouver is Awesome. Before-and-after photos (we’re not interested in making you look anything less than utterly adorable, don’t worry!) are part of the deal. This is a chance to work with Candice (who has no interest in having your long brown locks transformed into a peroxide pixie … unless that’s what you want) on an amazing new (and free!) look. Makeover Madness is a lot of fun but the best part is – the winner is going to look like a million bucks.

Contest closes on Friday, September 10 at 5:00 pm. Winner will be contacted by email and the makeover madness fun will begin after that …

Good luck!

I would love a sassy new look. Not that it’s a bad one, but I have been rocking the same look since cough the nighties cough.

    Muy gracias!

  • Mark

I could use some colour in my hair right now. My last haircut turned out to be a mess… I was down in Guatemala so I went into a cheap barber shop there… Which could have worked out fine. But, I don’t speak much Spanish, so I could only ask for the “typico”. Apparently, that means take it short and make it shapeless. Impossible to style, I have been wearing hats pretty much everyday since.

  • Gee

In need of a trim, I asked my sister to take a few centimetres off my mane. She agreed, and set me upon a chair with some beer and angled me towards a stunning view of the harbour as she went to work. Music was blaring and good times were being had until I heard her utter the words: “I don’t really know how to layer!” (Of course she doesn’t, considering her previous hair cutting experience was limited to clients of the Barbie variety.) I told her to stop and wandered over to a mirror where I saw my hair had been trAnsformed into a pyramid shaped hedge. Since this incident, I’ve been
a haircut phobe and have pretty much kept
the same look up until a couple weeks ago when I decided to
cut my own bangs (you’d think I’d learn?) and now I deal with a daily struggle of finding a way to make myself look presentable.

  • Sarah

I like free, which is why I cut my own hair. Needless to say my hair could use someone that knows what they are doing.

The worst hair I ever had was when I’d been dyeing my hair red with vegetable dye and let most of it grow out, and then decided I wanted to go bleach blonde. Unfortunately I used drugstore dye and didn’t realise that you can’t really do permanent on top of semi-permanent, and so only the part that had grown out went blonde; the rest varied from greyish-yellow near the middle of my hair to a murky, rusty brownish-orange at the bottom. For some reason I decided this was ok and left it for almost four months. I have tried to destroy all photos of myself from that time.

Currently I’m trying to grow my hair into a bob after having it shaved on one side and short with long bangs on the other. It looks really awkward right now. Kinda mullet-y. I’ve been saying for weeks I should clean it up, but I just haven’t gotten around to it.

  • Kate

The worst hair I ever had was when I was 5 years old and my mom used the vaccuum to hold my hair up while she tried her best for that “cute” shaggy look that was ever so popular in the mid nineties. Despite her best efforts, my hair looked like layers of brown stranded lightning bolts, and I wore a hat to pre-school until we could seek professional help. I may have been young, but boy to I remember it vividly..*shudders*

2nd worst would be 3 years ago when I tried to colour my brown hair with henna dye…and it turned forrest green!

Currently I’d love to try some straight across bangs and get some layers, texture, and shape back into my hair. I’m such a busy student I haven’t had a chance to get a haircut in almost 9 months!

  • Carla

K…40 is around the corner. Youngest child is going to grade one and I am feeling a little lost. Big changes ahead and I am ready for a big change in the way I look as well!! Sign me up!!!

  • Gee

I need help. The last time I was at a salon they just looked at me and asked “why?” And asked me if my excuse was my life style. I know! Harsh. But it made me think I could really use some assistance in that department.

  • Emma

The worst style I ever had was a sort of longish mushroomy cut that was supposed to be a bob but never looked like one that was made worse when I decided to dye a blue-black stripe right at the top of my head. Yeah. Teenagers have terrible taste.

I desperately need a makeover. My hair is super thick and fairly wavy, and I think it confuses and scares stylists. I’m also a poor student so I go for months and months between cuts. My bangs right now are seriously horrendous — they’re too long and wavy so they don’t lay flat and end up curling out from the side of my head. Not a good look, let me tell you.

  • Elle

I gotta say I’ve pretty much had the same hairstyle my whole life. You grow up in a ballet school, and scraping your fringe back and shoving your hair up in a bun becomes as bad and ugly a habit as picking your nose.
OK, so its livable – but boy, its as dull as a rainy Vancouver day…

  • Tammy

Had the best haircut of my life there by Candice. Seriously a genius with scissors… Candice-scissor-hands, THANK YOU!

  • LB

I can’t believe I’m admitting this on the internets, but during a tomboy phase in the 80s I actually had a rats tail. It was bad. I loved it. My older sister refused to talk to me until I cut it off. I’ve been doing better since then but would really really love to get blue streaks in my hair!

My wife needs a hair cut! If I win, she’s gettin’ dolled up and I’ll be the hero :) It’s pretty much a win-win. C’mon VIA, let’s make this happen!

  • Katherine

The worst look I have rocked is mega roots! I’ve always taken short cuts to save money for my hair and sometimes it works out, sometimes not. I treat myself once in a blue moon and go to a proper, qualified hairstylist! I didn’t notice how bad my hair was until a hairdresser asked me when I looked at the back of my head … then she showed me with a hand held mirror and I was horrified! What was worse is, she said that I should be horrified … And a new development in mega bad hair: my friend who has had less than 1 yr experience dyed my hair Wednesday night and oops, he died it BLACK … after I said, I didn’t want black! Now I look like I have an Elvira wig on. I’m definitely emailing you photos now :)
