The Proof - Mitchell Fawcett

Design is in the details; no other statement could hold more true to Mitchell. It is represented in how he dresses, in the books he collects and even how he prepares his food.

Design is in the details; no other statement could hold more true to Mitchell. It is represented in how he dresses, in the books he collects and even how he prepares his food. In a city like Vancouver where everything is shiny and new, Mitchell finds beauty in forgotten buildings and shady alleyways. To help portray a concept he travels to the ends of the earth to find the right font, the right paper and most importantly the right words. If he does not go to these great lengths the project for him is incomplete.

Mitchell Fawcett proof

The Proof

1) I border on minimalism in most areas of my life, but I will never be able to have too many books. Douglas Coupland is my favorite author. I’ve already rehearsed what I will say to him the day I finally bump into him on the street.

2) My apartment has sliding glass walls all over the place, and although they would create a total death trap in an earthquake, they also double as massive whiteboards for writing down ideas. Depending on how many projects I have on the go, it can look like my place belongs to a crazed lunatic.

3) Coffee is a blessed constant in what are otherwise unpredictable days. I’m always in search of the perfect cup… a lot of places in Vancouver have actually come pretty close.

4) Chinatown is my favorite area of Vancouver. Such a colorful variety of activity set against the most incredible architecture in the city. There is always something beautiful to see.

5) Berry season is one of my absolute favorite parts about BC summers. I can never eat enough of these. Even as a kid, I was way more likely to choose these over junk food.

6) Christmas is a hugely important time of year for me. I have a really big, really close family, and we are all fiercely fanatical about our Christmas traditions. This picture is my sister’s dog Sass (no family member is excluded from the festivities).

7) I love doing anything that terrifies me. It’s absolutely intoxicating. This is a picture of my first time bungee jumping. Although I’m an adrenaline junkie, right before the big moment I’m always the most terrified one in the group.

8) Maui, to me, is the perfect escape. It’s exactly the type of therapy for an overexerted brain. No humidity, no crazy killer bugs, no problems…

The Questions

What neighborhood do you live in?

I’ve been in the same apartment in Yaletown since moving here almost four years ago. “Pretentious yuppies” you say? I can happily disagree. I have some of the friendliest neighbours that come from walks of life. It’s much more eclectic than most people think.

What do you do and where?

I’m a freelance publicist and graphic designer. I can usually be found all over the city in meetings or working from a coffee shop, but I keep a pretty good home base in my apartment.

What are you working on?

I just started working on a new project designing the catalogue for the Canadian Photographic Portfolio Society, which I’m really excited about. The board is made up of some really impressive minds from all over the Canadian art scene. It’s really inspiring to be able to collaborate with them.

Where can we find your work?

Most of my work is behind the scenes, but you can follow me on Twitter (@mitchellfawcett) if you’re really serious about stalking me.
