Antique Sky showcasing new works by Jay Issac opens Friday, September 17th from 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm. The show runs from September 17th – October 17th.

The work in Antique Sky is comprised of forty highly saturated abstract marker drawings on paper. Similar to Isaac’s previous observational paintings, the works are self-referential and do not follow an exterior thesis that directs the work. They are the result of examining a formal technique over time, where the finished piece and the process itself are equally the subject. Content, as such, does not exist.
In titling the show Antique Sky, Isaac refers to his recent business endeavor where he has opened an antique store in Toronto. The notion that everything made in the present can be a potentially valuable object in the future is not only a self-deprecating joke, but a critique of the status quo’s obsession with newness. Like much of Isaac’s work, Antique Sky investigates values and strategies in contemporary art and how they are constructed.
Jay Isaac (Saint John, NB 1975) lives and works in Toronto. He has shown extensively in Canada, the United States and internationally including exhibitions at the Power Plant, Mocca, Mercer Union and the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto; White Columns and CUE Art Foundation in New York; Weatherspoon Museum in Greensboro, NC; Galerie Kunstbuero, Vienna; Musee d’art Moderne, Bologna; CSA space and the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver; and Acuna Hansen in Los Angeles.
He is represented by Paul Petro Contemporary Art, Othergallery and LES gallery. Jay Isaac is also co-founder/publisher of the contemporary art magazine Hunter and Cook.
