TalkGreenToUs.ca – Goal #9

September 30, 2010
Imagine 2020. In just ten years, Vancouver will be the greenest city in the world.

A vision this bold cannot be realized alone. That’s why the city is inviting you to talk green to them.

Share your ideas for making Vancouver the greenest city in the world. Help them make the critical choices. Help them prioritize between blue-sky visions and immediate opportunities. This is your city – make it better. Between now and October 7, add your voice to this life-changing conversation. Share your ideas or vote on the ones you like.

The City of Vancouver has ten greenest city goals. Learn about all ten, and tell them how you think they can best be achieved at www.talkgreentous.ca.

GOAL #9: Clean Air
Always meet the most stringent of World Health Organization, Canada, BC or Metro Vancouver objectives for air quality

Vancouver already enjoys relatively clean air compared to most major cities, thanks to effective programs and regulations, as well as favourable weather. However, it is not possible to monitor air quality everywhere in the city, so there may be specific areas not currently monitored where air quality could be improved.

CHALLENGES:
As population and goods transportation both grow, it may be difficult to improve air quality. Many air emission sources (such as marine vessels, trucks or heavy industries) are under Federal, Provincial or Metro Vancouver authority, so successful reductions from these sources will require continued leadership from our partners. Actions that reduce emissions of one pollutant may increase emissions of another pollutant, so carefully considered tradeoffs may be required.

Eco Fashion Week: Q&A with Myriam Laroche

September 29, 2010

Vancouver-transplant and 15-year fashion industry vet Myriam Laroche is the mastermind behind Eco Fashion Week, which kicks off tonight with an opening party at the Aveda Institute in Gastown and ends on Thursday with a DJ set by K-OS at Club 560.

More importantly, in between, there are seminars from industry experts, like WGSN’s Carly Stojsic and Summer Rayne Oakes, and from Nobel Peace Prize winners, like Dr. Andrew Weaver. Designers Nicole Bridger, Lara Miller, Kim Cathers, Lav & Kush, Lara Presber and more are sending their sustainable collections down the runway at Creekside Community Centre (the greenest building in the city, by the way!) in the Olympic Village during the four-day event

Myriam took a couple minutes out of her hectic agenda to answer a few very quick questions about Eco Fashion Week and why it’s so awesome for Vancouver and the rest of the world. –May Globus

Eco-Fashion Week: Q&A with Nicole Bridger

September 29, 2010

Nicole speaks at the Eco-Fashion Week launch party. Rachel Fox photo.

Nicole Bridger is a Vancouver designer whose eponymous label is synonymous with sustainable fashion. Each of her garments are draped beautifully (a skill no doubt honed interning at Vivienne Westwood) is made locally, using bamboo cotton, hemp jersey and organic knit from as close as possible (hooray for small carbon footprints!). Embellishments come in the form of affirmation labels, tagua nut buttons and 100% post-consumer paper hangtags, and Nicole even includes where all the fabrics from her minimal, neutral-tone collections come from, too.

The Nicole Bridger show is tonight, with doors opening at 8pm. Tickets are still available, so get yours now.

How excited are you for the first Eco Fashion Week ever?
It’s so great that its happening. This is something Vancouver could really be known for.
Tell us about the philosophy behind your clothing label.
There are three main parts. Do what is right, [do] what is good for the earth and [do what is good for] its people and spirit. So we are mindful of the Earth by using sustainable fabrics. We are mindful of its people by using ethical practices, and we help promote positive energy by putting “I am love” labels into each piece of clothing. Reminding people that we are all love energy at the root and to speak kindly to ourselves and others. When you come from love and respect, all these principles are natural.
When is your EFW runway show, and what can we expect? What were your inspirations, and what materials did you use?
[My show is on] September 29 at 8:30pm — doors are at 8pm. Every season, I look to my life lessons for inspiration. I finally had the strength to leave a very negative relationship with my ex-husband and felt as though a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. This collection is called ‘Reconnect’. It is about reconnecting with my soul and finding my true happiness, perhaps for the first time in my life. So it is a very happy collection with lots of colour. Through this transformation, my creative energy is beginning to flow again, and I think you will see this in the show.
From when you started your label to right now, have you seen an increased and genuine, growing interest in sustainable fashion?
Absolutely. It’s becoming much more mainstream. Before it was on the fringe, something most people thought was too weird for them. Now, only a few years later, most people just get it and are looking for ways to have a lighter footprint.
Why do you think Eco Fashion Week is important for the industry, and for the world?
It’s a great way to showcase the fantastic eco lines that are out there. It’s also, in my opinion, something that Vancouver is already known for and this could really draw some international designers, buyers and press to the city.
What are your hopes for the outcome of this event?
I would say firstly to have fun. It is a time to share with my clients and just have a good time and get excited about new designs to come. Then of course some press, but not just in Vancouver. And if we could get a few more accounts, that would be amazing.
Finally, what makes Vancouver so awesome?
Do you need to ask? For me, it’s the connection to nature. The beaches, the trees. It’s being able to live a cosmopolitan lifestyle while getting to enjoy the outdoors. A healthy lifestyle is important to people here, and I really enjoy that.

TRAGEDY PLUS TIME VOLUME 13 – KAITLIN FONTANA

September 29, 2010
“Comedy is tragedy plus time.”
It’s been said many times by many comedians. I believe the original usage dates back to the great Carol Burnett. It’s a quote I have borrowed from to title this column about the wonderful talent in the comedy community right here in Vancouver.Since I’ve lived in Vancouver, I’ve heard a lot of people say that they had a bad experience at a comedy show and never went back. This is as ridiculous as swearing off restaurants as a whole because of one case of food poisoning. It’s my hope, that the profiles here will bring back those who have turned away or open the door for those who have never seen live comedy.

Finally, for those out there that don’t like to laugh, they might be best served by a quote from another lady of show business, Julia Roberts:
“Show me a person who doesn’t like to laugh and I’ll show you a person with a toe tag.”

**************************************

It is a pleasure to see someone when they put their disparate talents to use at once. When it comes to Kaitlin Fontana I have been fortunate enough to be present on one of those occasions.

It was a Hero Show performance (the monthly delight at the China Cloud) that featured Fontana delivering a morose monologue about her trying to come to grips with her diagnosis as a person who cannot eat wheat. She sadly presented a slide show that served as her farewell to pizza.

The talents at work were Kaitlin’s gift as a writer and her expertise in performance.

The writing work has its roots in her graduating from UBC’s creative writing program and contributing pieces to giants from SPIN to Rolling Stone to Walrus. Her performance and improv skills were honed with UBC’s Improv, Rosa Park Improv  !nstant theatre and studying with Armando Diaz (the performer not the general).

The two disciplines seem naturally in opposition to one another. One is a form where each word is poured over and nursed until each sentence is just right. The other is a celebration of the word and action in spontaneity, but Kaitlin seemed to balance both and make it seem natural.

At work in her every day life is another talent that never gets exhibited on stage.  It is that of media and sponsorship director for the Vancouver International Improv Festival.  Talking to Kaitlin about this event, you quickly learn that her passion for this festival and all it brings to both the city and to the performers is second only to her passion for the science fiction titan known as Star Trek (fact).

Passion for her work is something Fontana never has in short supply, but with all her pursuits, she might have to add juggler to her resume.

When was the last time you laughed until you cried?

Rosa Parks just went to Austin, Texas for a comedy festival. On the plane, I kept hearing soft music, like someone’s headphones were turned up too loud. Then I realized that it was slightly out of tune, low singing, so I looked casually behind me and saw a tiny Asian lady, singing to herself, sitting next to a guy who looked totally mortified. I elbowed Briana and Nicole and got them to listen, and she proceeded to sing an entirely made up, tuneless song with no verses and no choruses about nothing at all to this poor guy next to her. And when she finished the song, she said, “And that’s how that one goes.” This pattern continued for over half an hour, and so did our muffled laughter and tears of joy. People are amazing!

What would be your idea of a perfect venue?

One that was part bar, part theatre with a devoted, knowledgeable improv audience who listened warmly and only shouted out when asked. With no TVs. During the day, it would be used for workshops taught by all of my favourite improvisers, past and present. I would have a time machine for the ones that are now dead, so I could fetch them from the best moment in their improv life and bring them to teach my friends and I. This theatre, which would be in Vancouver, would never encounter any zoning/ordinance issues, because I would be the mayor.

Oh, and it will definitely have a kitchen, and that kitchen shall make the most delicious curly fries.
