DiYVR: How Do You Like to Get Your Hands Dirty?

September 29, 2010

After a long summer the details about which I’ll save you from, I’m very happy to be starting up a new regular feature here at Vancouver Is Awesome. DiYVR is all about making and crafting, and about where and from whom to buy locally made goods.

I make stuff and write about making stuff for a living, so I’m intimately familiar with the stuff I like. But I’d love to know what you want to learn more about, dear readers. Crafty class and workshop schedules? Craft fair dates? Groups you can join? Specific handcrafts that really turn your crank? Stories about Vancouverites who make  things by hand? Stories about products made locally by hand? Features on shops that carry handmade goods? Local websites?

Please, oh please, leave a comment and let me know. I’ll do my best to cater to your every crafty/making need.

And The Winner of Makeover Madness is….

September 29, 2010

Miss Elle!!!!

This Lovely Lady won Vancouver is Awesome‘s Makeover Madness giveaway from Barbarella Saloon!

See, this is what happens when you enter Vancouver is Awesome‘s giveaways.

Amazingly talented (and beautiful!) stylist Candice Bartlett gives the Official Word on what went down with Elle’s ‘do….

“Pre-makeover Elle had shoulder-length, lifeless locks. The color was washing her out – highlights were too contrasting and the base color was mousey.”

Beauty takes time.

“I went in and made her base color richer by changing it to a medium golden brown with slices and balayage (free form painting on the hair) of a rich heather and light golden browns and blondes. Took the cut to a mid length modern bob with lots of texture and layering-also giving a Elle a full fringe in the front contouring the angles in her face. From drab to fab.
Prepped the hair the with Sidlab‘s (out of California) designer texturizing and volumizing spray to highlight the movement and give the hair some rock and roll va va voom.”

Candice did an amazing job. Congrats on your new look, Elle!!!

Daily Flickr Pickr – Day 268

September 29, 2010

Every day we share a single photo from our Flickr Pool shot by one of our faithful and talented readers (that’s you!). On the flickr page Pamplemousse has an airplane in her name. How cool is that? I think that I chose his photo, “Raindrops and Bokehs in an Assortment of Sizes and Colours”, today because I couldn’t bear to put it up on a day when it’s actually raining. That and the fact that I was shooting something almost exactly the same a few nights ago. Oh, and also, my best friend in high school was nicknamed pamplemousse, which as you know, is french for grapefruit.

Very Interesting…

September 29, 2010

Interesting Vancouver is revving up for their third year in a row at the Vancouver Rowing Club next Friday, October 8th. If you’ve never heard of Interesting it’s an international speaking engagement happening in London, New York, Amsterdam and more and the tagline is “No theme, no topics…no problem.”.

They invite interesting folks from all walks of life to tell their stories, and this year one of our good friends, Amanda Gibbs from the Museum of Vancouver, will be getting up and sharing something… well… interesting! Learn all about it HERE.

Timeraiser!

September 29, 2010

Emcee Marc Smith from @Amuse_Events.

I first told you about the Third Annual Vancouver Timeraiser HERE a couple of weeks ago. The event went off last week and get this – they raised almost 7,000 hours of volunteer time! That is incredible!

This was the scene at The Roundhouse Community Centre, where hundreds of people ate, drank, learned about the many organizations needing volunteers and then silently auctioned off their time for a variety of great causes. Congratulations to the winners, who get to pick up their art at next year’s party – after they complete their hours!

A couple of last year’s winners collecting their art and a well-deserved round of applause.

Below is photographer Danielle Baker with her muse, Timeraiser’s social media guru Jessica Evans. That’s Jessica’s foot in the red shoe, which actually belongs to Danielle.

Super, Neighbours in British Columbia:
The Wickaninnish Inn, Tofino
Part Five of Six – Carving

September 29, 2010
In last year’s Georgia Straight BEST OF awards we took home an editor’s pick for “Best Navel Gazing Web Site“, and while our non-profit organization that supports our web site (Vancouver Is Awesome, Inc) is focused on celebrating all of the awesome things that make up our city one of those things is it’s proximity to other awesome places. In this new series of features entitled Super, Neighbours in British Columbia we’ll be taking you on adventures to other BC locales that we think you should check out.

For this first multi-part edition my wife and I visited one of the most amazing places on earth: the Wickaninnish Inn in Tofino. We spent a relaxing 3 days there and we will certainly be visiting Tofino again to do another another installment of Super, Neighbours but this first one is specifically about “The Wick” as the locals call it, and a few of our favourite offerings that it boasts.

Explore this amazing place for yourself on their WEB SITE, then step into Super, Neighbours…

In this fourth part I’m bringing you the Carving Shed… and beyond! Just down the beach from the Inn, just on the property, is this mystery of a little wood-and-tool-filled shed that you can walk into and see carvers working. It was originally inhabited by a fellow by the name of Henry Nolla (who passed away a few years back and left an amazing legacy) and it was our pleasure to be at the Wick during the soon-to-be-annual Carving On The Edge festival. The festival “showcases the traditional and contemporary explorations of west coast carving with exhibits, forums, feasts, family programs and demonstrations.” and they had a Henry Nolla retrospective show (hosted by the Wick’s very own The Pointe Restaurant) that we checked out on our last night there.

The entrance to the shed.

@TeganandSara and You (Say Party!) @ The Malkin

September 29, 2010

This was the scene on Friday at the Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park. Local favourites You Say Party! were the perfect openers for the lovely Tegan & Sara, fresh off the Polaris Prize hoopla.
