Recycled Skate Shoes. Want!

September 28, 2010

Win a Pair of These Recycled Lakai Shoes!

Designed and tested by Guy Mariano.

Made from recycled materials, these Lakai shoes have clearly reached a kind of shoe nirvana. Very cool. (And also a very appropriate tie-in to Eco-Fashion Week which is happening now, Vancity! Read all about it HERE.)

These shoes are courtesy of our friends at Supra Distribution. Check out their Homegrown feature HERE.

Because they incorporate recycled materials into their construction, no two pairs are exactly alike. They also feature:

1. Flexible, vulcanized contstruction
2. New tacky gum rubber outsole with herringbone construction
3. Full-length shock-absorbing constructions
4. Form fitting upper for increased board feel
5. Durable suede upper
6. Recycled sole is 50% regrind and 50% new rubber

So, when you win a pair of these shoes you have to know that before they became these awesome shoes they had another life… as something else. What were they? …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>

IDS West: Meet the Exhibitors! @Homewerx

September 28, 2010

IDS West is an exciting annual exhibition featuring the most innovative trends in residential architecture, design, products and services and will be taking over the Vancouver Convention Centre during the weekend of October 14-17. Over 200 exhibitors will be attending and presenting their wares to an audience of over 25,000 people. For more information on IDS West, go HERE.

If you know Davie Village at all, then you know Homewerx. It’s a staple on Davie St. and always worth a wander through an impressive floor featuring a host of very cool (and useful!) home accoutrements for the conscious (and trendy!) Vancouverite. They have an incredible array of stock and it’s never the same place twice. They even sell the Native Shoes that Bob (and even little Arlo!) keeps raving about! Homewerx sets out to “build a retail concept that caters to a modern lifestyle; from home decor, to music, books, gourmet foods and kitchen tools.” Homewerx will be exhibiting at IDS West. For more information on the store, visit their site HERE.

52 Weeks of ‘East Van Cats’ – WEEK 48

September 28, 2010

The cats rule East Vancouver. They’re everywhere…sidewalks, roads, hiding in doorways, supervising stores, sprawled out anywhere to have a bath. The cats I meet while wandering through East Van are probably all house-pets but it’s not clear who ‘owns’ them. Cats are all about territory, but all space is public to them.

Stay tuned…When the project is finished I hope to have photographed every one of the East Van Cats!

Daily Flickr Pickr – Day 267

September 28, 2010

Every day we share a single photo from our Flickr Pool shot by one of our faithful and talented readers (that’s you!). If it wasn’t for bev.davies we pretty much wouldn’t know what the music scene in the 70′s and 80′s looked like in Vancouver. Growing up on the edge of the Vancouver punk world I knew her photos long before I knew who she was. She is one important lady.

What’s she doing today? Documenting the development of some amanita muscaria. Mushrooms people! The kind that every kid draws in crayon. Red with big white dots. After you take a look at this shot, spend some time in her photostream if you are a fan of local music.

The Proof – Celia Chung

September 28, 2010

Celia draws; and Celia designs too. From a young age she filled sketchbooks after sketchbooks with colourful drawings, and she’s always had a keen imagination. She’s always looking for the bigger picture, she always has an opinion and she’s not afraid to share. She has wide interests, from film to science to pop culture, and wears her “nerd” badge with pride.
Little known fact: Celia has a chipped front tooth from a playground fight at age 9. The boy in the fight had it way worse.

celia chung proof

The Proof

01 Marvin the cat. Can usually be found sprawling on whichever surface I happen to need at the moment.

02 Jericho Beach. My little getaway when I’m stuck and need inspiration.

03 Calhoun’s on West Broadway. Another place I go for inspiration. It’s rare to see it like this since it’s usually packed.

04 Some business card/bookmark I designed for my final project as a design student.

05 I like movies. Here’s a tiny selection of my DVD collection – there are many, many more.

06 My set up when working from home, my trusty giant coffee mug at its usual spot.

07 I enjoy good food, and cooking good food – here’s some pasta with chopped chicken liver in tomato basil sauce. Yum!

08 Personal project in progress – a series of photo/illustration collage of famous authors and their quotes. Shown here is Kurt Vonnegut and his opinion on smoking.

The Questions

What neighborhood do you live in?
Kitsilano.

What do you do and where?
I recently graduated from the Digital Design program at Vancouver Film School and now I busy myself with various freelance projects. I work from home and occasionally from the beach :)

What are you working on?
I am working on various identity/logo projects.

Where can we find your work?

Rain City Chronicles: Olio Festival Edition

September 28, 2010

This past Friday I got the chance to attend and photograph the September edition of the Rain City Chronicles, which was presented at the Anza Club as part of the Olio Festival. Included in the line up of storytellers (and it was a good line up) was Grant Lawrence, who told a story from his recently released book Adventures in Solitude.

It was a great time full of stories and laughs (and delicious baked goods!), I definitely recommend checking out the next one. Maybe I’ll even tell a story myself some day.

TalkGreenToUs.ca – Goal #8

September 28, 2010
Imagine 2020. In just ten years, Vancouver will be the greenest city in the world.

A vision this bold cannot be realized alone. That’s why the city is inviting you to talk green to them.

Share your ideas for making Vancouver the greenest city in the world. Help them make the critical choices. Help them prioritize between blue-sky visions and immediate opportunities. This is your city – make it better. Between now and October 7, add your voice to this life-changing conversation. Share your ideas or vote on the ones you like.

The City of Vancouver has ten greenest city goals. Learn about all ten, and tell them how you think they can best be achieved at www.talkgreentous.ca.

GOAL #8: Clean Water
Always meet the strongest of BC, Canadian and World Health Organization drinking water standards; Reduce per capita residential water consumption by 20% by 2020 and 50% by 2050

Vancouver is extremely fortunate: we get our water from watersheds in the North Shore mountains—almost 600 square kilometres of mountainous terrain that is closed to public access, keeping these deep rain and snow-fed reservoirs clean. Our water is tested more than 25,000 times each year.

CHALLENGES:
Water is a multi-jurisdictional issue, and we must work in concert with Metro Vancouver, which supplies drinking water to all Lower Mainland municipalities. Climate change may have unknown effects on rainfall and snowfall in our watersheds, and our growing population will increase demand.
