VANCOUVER’S MOST AWESOME EVIL: DEERMAN OF DARK WOODS

October 31, 2010

In the spirit of Halloween, I’m putting away my ‘if it’s not ponies and rainbows’ motto to bring you Deerman of Dark Woods.  For those of you who are not familiar with Deerman or Barrier Kult, they are an underground group devoted to destroying the weak and feeble trends of skateboarding through militant worship of nature, specifically barrier violence.

What makes Vancouver so awesome?

THE BARRIER KULT ORIGINATORS ARE FROM THE AREA THAT ESTABLISHED OUR INITIAL DARK FOLKLORISH BASE: THE INTERIOR OF BC.  AFTER I WITNESSED THE LEGENDARY ANIMAL-LIKE PHANTOM OF THE OKANAGAN WOODS – THE ‘DEER MAN’ – THE BARRIER KULT WAS ESTABLISHED AND I WAS TITLED ‘DEER MAN OF DARK WOODS’.  THE TERRIFYING LORE OF THE DARK WOODS OF THE INTERIOR SPILT INTO STREAMS THAT LED MYSELF AND THE BARRIER KULT THEOLOGIES INTO THE LOWER MAINLAND.  THE RAIN FORESTS AND THE CONCRETE THAT HAS BEEN FRAMED AND ENVELOPED BY THE DARK MOUNTAIN RANGES MAKES ‘VANCOUVER’ A PLACE OF RITUAL AND AWE.  ASCEND INTO THE MOUNTAINS – THE VOID OF OBLIVION.  THE OCEAN SHORES HAVE ALSO BEEN GOOD TO BARRIER KULTIST ‘DEPTH LEVIATHAN DWELLER’ AS HIS INTERIOR OGOPOGO SERPENT ROOTS ARE NOW IN TERRIFYING SYMMETRY IN THE WAKE OF VANCOUVER ISLAND’S SEA SERPENT CADBOROSAURUS.

Who’s your favourite Vancouverite?

THE TITLED BARRIER KULT MEMBERS OF THE LOWER MAINLAND:

DEPTH LEVIATHAN DWELLER

VLAD MOUNTAIN IMPALER

BLACK GLOVE OF INTERNAL COMBUSTION

HAMMERER OF ROOTS

MUSKELLUNGE OF DARK ISLAND

STATUE OF THE BLACK CROW

FINGER POINTING TO OBLIVION

IN ESSENCE AND VIOLENT RITUAL – THE BARRIER KULT DOES NOT WORSHIP HUMAN FIGURES.  THE BARRIER KULT WORSHIPS FEARSOME REPRESENTATIONAL MOVEMENTS.  THE DARK CLAD PHANTOMS OF SKULL SKATES AND WHAT SKULL SKATES REPRESENTS.  VANCOUVER-BASED BLACK WAR METAL BANDS SUCH AS BLASPHEMY AND CONQUEROR.  ALSO – THE VICIOUS CIRCLES OF NATURE THAT RULE OUR COAST AND, ONCE ASCENDED AND DRAWN FROM THE RAW DEPTHS OF OCEAN, SOIL AND ROOTS, SHALL EVENTUALLY REGAIN POWER.

LEESIDE HALLOWEEN

October 30, 2010

Skateboarding is dangerous.  You throw in masks and a couple roman candles, that’s mayhem, which is why this only happens once a year.  Leeside is one of Vancouver’s most unique and important skate spots, it’s a really hard place to skate for a number of reasons which is why it’s so cool to see the locals rule it.  This is the biggest event of the year here which is why you can’t miss it, even if you don’t skate, it’s a party, so come one, come all, just wear a costume and be prepared to….DUCK!

Last year’s event courtesy of Rolling Bones Podcast

HEAVY METAL ARTIFACTS WITH RATTLEHEAD GERALD: SLAYER!

October 29, 2010
Rattlehead is best known for hosting Powerchord on Citr with Metal Ron from 1985.   He’s seen over a thousand shows and is Vancouver’s biggest rock and roll fan, period.  Over the years, venues have closed, scenes change, but Gerald’s always been there.  And he’s doing it all for the love of it, which is why Vancouver’s lucky to have him.

Gerald was gracious enough to share a few of his most prized pieces of memorabilia with me, so I could share them with you over the next few months.

This is from Slayer’s Reign in Blood tour, which was in 1986.   I didn’t get it autographed until last year.  I was in the hotel lobby and I saw Tom (lead singer) but he was too busy, he had to jump in the van and go to the venue.  So then I go to the venue, and one of the roadies was saying how Tom recognized me, their business manager was right there too who I remembered from way back.  He got it signed for me.

You must have interviewed them a bunch of times over the years.

Yeah, they used to make fun of my voice.   Kerry started it with ‘you still on the helium?’  Then Jeff would give me a hard time too.

What was the best Slayer concert you’ve seen?

Probably that one, the Reign of Blood tour.  It was at the Moore theatre in Seattle, that was October 31st 1986, that was the first day of the tour.  And two years later, they played at the Colesium, also on Halloween.  I think Slayer’s first gig ever was on Halloween.  Headbangers love Halloween.

Around then was a pretty important time for metal yeah?

Yeah, metal was really picking up, stuff like thrash, death metal, they were starting to come into the fold.  Even the hardcore stuff was starting to meld into metal too.  In Vancouver, I’d go to hardcore punk shows and there’d be no metal guys there, they’d be looking at me going ‘who’s that guy?’  I never really go much grief with that though, maybe they’d say something about my long hair, but that’s it.  The other way around though, metal guys were pretty rough on punks at metal shows.

Native Fitzsimmons Boots

October 29, 2010

I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to tell you about the pair of Fitzsimmons boots that our friends at local footwear company, Native, put on my feet. I was considering taking a photo of them the last time I went fishing when I got fish blood on them (to show that I’m actually putting them to good use) but I figured that might be a little graphic (especially to some of our vegan readers… sorry guys!). So instead of real gore I’ll leave you with this great Halloween video they put together which features said Fitzsimmons…

Happy Halloweekend!!!

Scene and Heard: Last Week In Music: BREAK OUT WEST – DAY THREE

October 29, 2010
sceneandheard
SCENE AND HEARD showcases the independent music scene here in
Vancouver.
We interview some of our favourite local artists, post weekly guest playlists comprised of Vancouver artists and ‘Last Week in
Music’ highlights some of the concerts happening around the city..

Day Three of Break Out West was the last evening of the festival and the busiest I saw the city that weekend… In addition to the shows at night, Grant Lawrence did a reading at Mosaic Books where Michael Bernard Fitzgerald and Said The Whale both played two songs. Later in the evening I caught The Zolas and Dojo Workhorse at the Networking Mixer, Jasper Sloan Yip, as well as Library Voices at the Habitat, Rococode at Doc’s, Treelines at Memphis Blues and finally The Zolas again at Doc’s.

Tomorrow I will have up a few shots of the WCMAs! Check out photos of DAY ONE and DAY TWO as well.
