The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #9

October 29, 2010
Skateboard culture is deeply rooted in this fine city of ours. Not only does Metro Vancouver produce some of the world’s finest wood-wheelers, it’s also a major migratory destination for skaters from all over Canada. The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

A Pentictonite, 2 Kamloops-ians, and 6 ‘Couv-locs skated the Okanagan during the summer for a 10-pager in the current issue of Concrete entitled “In The OK”. This video evidence features Skylar Kehr, Matt Berger, Derek Swaim, Mike Schulze, Arte Lew, AJ McCallister, Desmond Hoostie, Spencer Hamilton and Danny Empey. In more Concrete news, the first-ever issue from 1990 is now available in online-mag form for your perusal. Click here for a walk down memory lane.

Originally from Vancouver, Cameo Wilson grew up skateboarding after moving to Las Vegas at a young age. He showed up in our town for a few months this past summer after a long hiatus and annihilated. Seriously. Learn more here.

Rob “Sluggo” Boyce (a Most Awesome recipient) is still rippin’ vert ramps at 41 years-old. He recently attended the invite-only Rumble In Ramona III near San Diego, and definitely made an impression. Learn all about it right here.

The always-entertaining Leeside Halloween Costume Jam is going down tomorrow in the DIY skate-haven near the PNE (where Fright Nights is also happening until the 31st). Speaking of “Nights”, veteran ripper (and owner of Auto Repairs R “Wee” on Kingsway) Wee Wong lights up the occasional park after-dark, so Ethan Miller and George Faulkner captured this particular session at Kensington on 37th and Knight (click here for photos):

Couture Halloween at Noir Lash Lounge

October 29, 2010

In a pinch for a Halloween costume this weekend? Make a couture statement and go the way of “Lady Gaga” for the festivities. Noir Lash Lounge introduces paper eyelashes – the newest trend to help glam up those windows to the soul – yes we’re talking about your eyes here!

Inspired by the art of Chinese paper cutting, each lash design has a symbolic meaning, where the horses represent success, the peony sends happiness and good fortune and peach blossoms spell love and romance.

Paper lashes may be too outrageous for your everyday look but Halloween is the perfect time to test the boundaries. Still not convinced? Not to worry. Noir Lash Lounge also carries the largest range of regular false lashes in BC and have lash technicians on hand to apply them for you!

Paper Eyelashes (range $21 – $23)
available at:
Noir Lash Lounge
1150 Hamilton Street (Yaletown)
3065 Granville Street (South Granville)
#106 – 16745 Croydon Drive (Morgan Crossing – Surrey)

UNPLUGGED Flickr Pick: Fungi

October 29, 2010
Every Friday I share with you one of the awesome outdoor photo’s submitted to our V.I.A. UNPLUGGED Flickr Pool.

Now I have to admit that the process of choosing a picture is becoming more and more difficult with all the phenomenal work showing up in the Flicker pool. That said, there was one picture that grabbed my eye this week and it comes to us courtesy of PiscesDreamer.

If you look at this shot, entitled Fungi, long enough you just might start to know what Alice Kingsleigh felt like after sampling that bottle that read “DRINK ME.”
