The Museum of Anthropology presents a new exhibition: May Ray, African Art and the Modernist Lens – opening Friday, Oct 30, 7pm. This exhibit is a groundbeaking exhibition exploring the pivotal role of photography in changing the perception of African objects from artifacts to fine art.

From PBS:

“Man Ray, the master of experimental and fashion photography was also a painter, a filmmaker, a poet, an essayist, a philosopher, and a leader of American modernism. Known for documenting the cultural elite living in France, Man Ray spent much of his time fighting the formal constraints of the visual arts. Ray’s life and art were always provocative, engaging, and challenging.

In 1914, Man Ray met the experimental artist Marcel Duchamp who became Man Ray’s close friend and collaborator. Together, they attempted to bring some of the energy of the European experimental art movements such as “dada” to America.”

Scene and Heard: Last Week In Music: BREAK OUT WEST – DAY TWO

October 28, 2010
sceneandheard
SCENE AND HEARD showcases the independent music scene here in
Vancouver.

We interview some of our favourite local artists, post weekly guest playlists comprised of Vancouver artists and ‘Last Week in
Music’ highlights some of the concerts happening around the city..

Day Two was a busy day for the festival, with the conference/seminars portion also beginning. (I sat in on part of Grant Lawrence’s “Making Friends With The Media” and saw a VIAwesome #BreakOutWest twitter post in a room full of people and tried to control myself…). The performances at night had me literally running (in heels) to get between sets, and I managed 6 shows in 4 hours. Day Two included: The Zolas, Adaline, Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, We Are The City, You Say Party, and The Dudes (which turned into an after party for everyone in town!) CHECK BACK TOMORROW FOR DAY THREE! (Click here for Day One)

CREATIVEMIX 2010 is just around the corner

October 28, 2010

The CREATIVEMIX 2010 conference is coming up quick, in fact it goes down next week on November 4th and the SPEAKER LINEUP this year is a doozy! Do you registered to attend yet? Learn all about CREATIVEMIX HERE and check out the teaser video just released today…

About the video:
“In preparation for the conference next week the guys at Fabric Creative have gone above and beyond the call of duty and we can’t keep quiet about it. CREATIVEMIX is a grassroots event that is still very much a humble affair but our team is working hard to make every aspect of the event as inspirational, encouraging, and helpful to our creative family as possible. One of the ways we wanted to take the conference to the next level was with great visuals in the program itself. Fabric Creative has put together our full motion graphics collateral and we figured it would be fun to share a teaser to wet your appetite. Enjoy.”

WEEKLY SLOP – TACOFINO

October 28, 2010

Not quite in Vancouver but on Vancouver Island. Tofino to be exact and so worthy of a post. Why? Because Tacofino could possibly be the best Mexican, or at least the best fish tacos in BC! Tacofino is a food truck that parks itself just behind LIVE TO SURF surf shop on the coastal highway on …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>

All You Can Eat… Fireworks?

October 28, 2010

Hey everybody! It’s me, Arlo, V.I.A.’s youngest blogger! I’m almost two years old now and you can click HERE to see all of my posts to date.

I’m writing today partly because I wanted to show off half of my super cute halloween costume! I’m going as a Grizzly bear thanks to my super awesome mom and grandma who made the costume for me and I thought you might enjoy a look at the hat part. But mostly why I’m making this post today is to let you in on something else that’s really, really awesome and also has to do with halloween.

Look beyond the cuteness in the photo below and you’ll see the Himalaya Restaurant. Charlie Demers, the author of the book Vancouver Special, and my dad have been having a bit of a public debate about which Indian restaurant on the block between 49th and 50th Avenue on Main Street is the best. You might remember THIS Dr Suess poem that Charlie wrote in defence of the Himalaya after my dad PRODDED him to join him for a meal at his favourite spot, The All India Sweets. Dad caved and Charlie ended up taking him out for lunch at the Himalaya and he’s gonna write about that lunch soon here on the blog. But before he does I just wanted to point out how sweet it is that this restaurant also sells fireworks around halloween! They’re not on the buffet though, you’ve gotta order them ala carte.

Uncle Charlie, could you pick me up some roman candles and a burning schoolhouse? I’m too young to get a permit for them.

In case you want to know what the city is telling you about getting a permit and buying fireworks from a place like the Himalaya, my dad SHARED those details with you earlier this week.

Scene and Heard: Last Week In Music: BREAK OUT WEST – DAY ONE

October 27, 2010
sceneandheard
SCENE AND HEARD showcases the independent music scene here in
Vancouver.

We interview some of our favourite local artists, post weekly guest playlists comprised of Vancouver artists and ‘Last Week in
Music’ highlights some of the concerts happening around the city..

Like I mentioned last week, Break Out West (a three day festival) and the Western Canadian Music Awards were happening in Kelowna, BC last weekend. It was 4 days of music, booze and parties and I documented it all.

Day One of the festival included performances by the Peak Performance Project’s Top 20 artists and I managed to get to 5 of them: 41st and Home, Yes Nice, Aidan Knight, Said The Whale, and Vince Vaccaro. It was a wonderful start to a music filled-weekend…CHECK BACK TOMORROW for Day Two of the festival with photos of more Vancouver, and Western Canadian, artists.

THIS WEEK IN MUSIC: If you missed Nadia von Hahn’s CD Release Tuesday at the Media Club, never fear there are plenty of shows coming up this week. Sufjan Stevens is at the Orpheum on Thursday, while Cory Woodward and Daniel Moir are live at The Main. On Friday, Library Voices and Bend Sinister will be at the UBC Pit Pub, and at Waves on Howe: Treelines, Bodhi Jones and St. Augustine. Last but not least The Waldorf Hotel is having its Grand Opening and throwing a free Halloween bash with performances and DJs.
