Read All Over – Sean Patrick Sullivan

October 26, 2010
Read All Over celebrates the bookworm in all of us, showcasing readers in Vancouver and the books they love most.

Sean Patrick Sullivan is a Vancouver writer/editor who — these days, at least — is interested in music, local food and running away to the wilderness in his free time. He’s good at sharing but doesn’t like talking about himself. Sean lives in a cottage in East Van.

What book makes you feel like a kid again?

The SAS Survival Handbook, by John Wiseman. It’s an illustrated, no-nonsense guide by a longtime instructor for the British Special Air Service that gives survival techniques for every disaster and situation imaginable, from the Arctic ice to mountains, jungles and swamps.

Learn about raiding hornet nests for food, making spear traps for wild pigs, building a snow cave, tying knots, reading constellations and building rafts to navigate a waterway. I want to try taking it and nothing else into the North Shore forest for a week; my girlfriend insists it’s better as a coffee table conversation piece. She’s probably right.

What books have changed your life?

Alden Nowlan: Selected Poems, edited by Patrick Lane and Lorna Crozier. Back when I was 18, I hitchhiked across most of Canada. After a nightmarish ordeal of a five-day hike through Jasper, I found myself in Edmonton, waiting for a train that would take me home to New Brunswick. I was short on money; whatever book I found would have to last me six days on the train. I found this.

Nowlan was a big, bearded man; an outsider who never quite overcame his feeling of isolation despite eventually being acknowledged as the best Canadian poet of his generation. He left school at 15 to work in a Nova Scotia mill, eventually moving to New Brunswick where he found a career as a journalist. He won a Governor General’s award for poetry and died of cancer in 1983.

The poems are simple but tell of complex human emotions, of awkwardness and uncertainty, of ordinary people and Canadian life. Much of this book is online, here.

The one book you always recommend is…

East of Eden, by John Steinbeck. This was the American writer’s self-proclaimed great work; he called it, “The story of my country, the story of me.” It’s a novel about two families and love, guilt, sin, self-destruction and redemption, set to the changing face of California’s Salinas Valley through the 1900s. One of the few novels I’ve been obsessed with, save for, perhaps, a couple by Kurt Vonnegut.

How do you like your books served up best – audio books, graphic novels, used paperbacks, library loaner, e-reader…

Used paperbacks. I’m rough on my books.

Your life story is published tomorrow. What’s the title?

That’s a tough one. Maybe, “A Maritime constitution.” I can’t tell you why.

Where is your favorite place to crack open a good book in Vancouver?

My couch, though I suppose I haven’t tried reading in many other places. The beach always seems like a good idea but I’m too distracted by birds, sand, moving water and tall things.

This is my safety-hazard of a patio. I can read there, but I usually don't.

DiYVR – November Craft Fairs in Vancouver

October 26, 2010
Look the person who made the gift you’re buying right in the eye when you buy it. Tell the recipient the artisan’s story to make the gift even more special.

This blurb sounds like a greeting card. But it’s not. It’s for real.

Handmade gift shopping – Vancouver’s got it.

The next two months are filled with craft fairs of all sorts, all over Vancouver. From super high-end handmade wares to wee adorable hair accessories, there’s something for everyone whether you’re shopping for yourself or for others. Here’s the skinny on the November fairs; look for the December roundup in a few weeks (if I missed one within the city of Vancouver, or if I got something wrong, let me know):

The Proof – Kaeli Stanfield

October 26, 2010

Kaeli Stanfield, aka STARFIELD, is an East Vancouver-based painter and self-proclaimed space cadet. Specializing in neon acrylics and airbrushing, she is best known for providing psychedelic artwork for numerous underground parties, as well as regular features at ORGANIX ,Vancouver’s long running, world famous weekly psychedelic trance night. She also recently completed her largest piece ever: a blacklight adventure covering the walls of an entire floor of the bowling alley at Grandview Lanes.  She has established a reputation for a bright and explosive style of art, and as of late has expanded her neon empire by doing stage decorations for many west coast festivals, such as Shambhala and Entheos. Kaeli is constantly painting and producing new and increasingly intense pieces. As her work is featured at more and more events, things can only get bigger and better for Starfield.
Words from a long time friend of mine , Ron.

Kaeli Stanfield's Proof

The Proof
01
Every good morning starts with espresso on Main st.

02 Airbrushing cool text on John’s van.

03 Organix! Vancouver’s longest running club night and my favorite place to get a beer on a Friday. I have been working with this crew since 2005 doing black light banners for the club and I absolutely love it.

04 Bikes! Everyone in my house rides a bike. Mine is the yellow one. Bikes make me happy.

05 Grandview lanes. Cosmic bowling is one of my favorite fall activities. Hot dogs, a smoke machine, and a laser! What more could you want? Oh and I covered the whole upstairs with a trippy mural too.

06 A painting I’m working on. Part of my 2012 pre-party series.

07 Some of my paint. Mmmmm neon.

08 Restoring a pinball machine to it’s original glory!

The Questions

What neighborhood do you live in?
Mount pleasant.  I love this area, it’s close to tons of good food, coffee, bike paths, big gardens, and stuff like that. It’s perfect for me.

What do you do and where?
Right now I’m working at a place called John’s Jukes.  I restore the artwork on old pinball machines and arcade games. It’s an awesome job for me for a few reasons. One is I can play unlimited amounts of Gallaga! Another is that I get to see a lot a amazing retro art and it inspires me. Especially the graphics on the pinball machines from the early 70’s and 80’s. The whole place is eye candy though.
When I’m not working I’m usually painting and airbrushing  psychedelic art in my living room…I mean studio. All the paint I use is neon and it glows with the help of a black light. I love bright things and I’m always trying to make my work look brighter.

What are you working on?
I’m working on a new set of black light banners for Organix at club 23 west. The theme is a kind of apocalyptic 2012 pre party with lots of mythological Mayan and Aztec creatures. It’s been really fun to paint so far because it’s all just crazy skulls and snakes and smoke etc.  We measured out the walls in the club before I started so it’s all going to be custom fitted to the space.

Aside from that, John , from John’s Jukes, has also hired me to paint on his van. This is the first time I have ever worked on an automotive project and I am loving it.

Where can we find your work?
Well, www.blacklightstarfield.com is my web site, I’m also on facebook under “Starfield Deco”, but if you want to see my paintings in person you have a few options…

I hang my latest work every Friday at ORGANIX @ Club 23 west in Gas Town. The whole club is full of  lasers and black lights and naturally my paintings as well.

I also have some paintings up in a lounge every Saturday called The Bunker, on Robson street near Denmen. It’s a cozy lounge space and on Saturday nights we turn on a few black lights and listen to some chill and dub electronica.

And then, last but not least, you can see my work any day of the week at Grandview Lanes , Bowling alley on Commercial drive. I did a huge mural for them in their upstairs cosmic bowling zone. It is definitely the biggest thing I’ve ever painted! I really love bowling too so it was a total honor to paint a bowling alley. Especially one that I play in sometimes.

The Bloodmobile delivers free juice and cookies

October 26, 2010

Last week the folks at FrugalBits.com got me to SHARE five of my favourite “free, cheap or worth it things to see, do or buy in Vancouver”. If I could go back I would add one more to the list, and that would be to hop aboard a vehicle called the Bloodmobile that’s driving around Vancouver handing out free Peek Freans and juice!

While it sounds like something Halloween themed it’s actually a new year-round thing that the Canadian Blood Services Agency just launched to make it easier for you to donate blood, and of course they’re not just giving out free stuff – this is one of the perks you get for giving blood, aside from the feeling you get knowing that you’re helping save somebody’s life. I heard about it and immediately thought how it’s going to make it easier for me to get back on a program of giving, so when it was around our neighbourhood last week (parked in front of the Party Bazaar) I dipped in to …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>

START YOUR WEEK RIGHT WITH THE V.I.A. WEEKLY PLAYLIST
WEEK 39 – Library Voices

October 25, 2010
sceneandheard
SCENE AND HEARD showcases the independent music scene here in Vancouver.

With 23,912 artists, boasting 106,660 tracks, the CBC Radio 3 web site is the absolute ultimate authority, and the home, of independent music in Canada. With that massive library along with tools for members (free to join!), we’re taking advantage of what they’ve set up by bringing you a fresh batch of music every week featuring local groups who have tracks (entire albums, even!) on the R3 site.

Library Voices are coming back to town (remember that amazing show during the Olympics? and that one with We Are The City?) and they are bringing Bend Sinister home with them – playing at the Pit Pub at UBC on Friday. SO to celebrate, we asked the band to pick some of their favourite Vancouver artists and put them in a playlist…Bend Sinister is on it, take a listen and see whom else:

A Stranger A Day Week – Stranger #4

October 25, 2010

I started this project called A Stranger A Day to overcome my shyness and talk to people. The challenge: talk to a stranger a day and try to convince them to let me take a picture and share a story. Since most tattoos have a story behind them, this will be my conversation starter and a common thread that links them all. Every week I will be sharing one of my favourite findings here on Vancouver Is Awesome.

Join me in this Stranger a Day adventure and let me know what you think!

Location: Elysian coffee at Ash and Broadway.

Original date: October 18th

Yup an early stranger. I was working around campus, setting up classrooms, assisting here and there when the coffee need kicked in, so I went to grab a cup… then I found one of the most elegant tattoos I’ve ever seen! She was sitting at the bar on the shop, about to leave, when I spotted a fine line on her arm. I thought I should let it pass, it was the beginning of the day anyways, but decided to jump in. I approached her and explained the project. To my surprise she was immediately into it and jumped in as well.

Oh which one should I show you? –she looked down to her leg and tried to roll up her jeans… Here, maybe get this one on my arm. I got it done a couple of years ago in London. A friend of mine had the same tattoo so I asked her if I could have it as well, because it was so elegant and simple and beautiful. This represents the circularity of emotions and life. When I’m working and I see it, it reminds me of all of this, not getting caught in emotions, the flow of everything. You know, there is life and death and it is all a cycle and this is what it represents.

I am pretty sure I am missing some words, I was fascinated about the simplicity and beauty of this piece –if you know me or have read this blog, you know that I have a soft spot for line tattoos. She also mentioned this project that some other guy was doing that was kind of similar, but he was KISSING a stranger a day.  WOW. Now that’s a challenge! Talking to strangers is already difficult enough. Although if you are good looking…. anyways, not my cup of tea, I’ll stick to talking. :)

This was an awesome early find. Now back to work. 14 hour school/work day ahead! *Superhero music plays on the background* I hope everybody has an awesome day.

Thanks stranger!
