Why are we even asking for donations?

November 30, 2010

Below are the contents of THIS PDF that you can download and read if you’re on the fence about helping us out with a financial donation to help keep us going for another year. It explains what we’re all about, what we’ve done in the last year and why we are so much more than “just a blog”. While we did win the Georgia Straight’s BEST LOCAL BLOG award for 2010 we do a ton of work outside of this online space and our annual operating budget needs help from donations from everybody in the community who benefits from what we do. We imagine that’s you and we hope that you will consider helping us out.

DiYVR: December Craft Fairs in Vancouver

November 30, 2010
The second half of November was like a wonderland of craft fairs, but if you didn’t notice or you’ve still got shopping to do for yourself or others, December will deliver!

Handmade gift shopping – Vancouver’s got it.

True story: I planned a last-minute trip around making sure I’ll be in town for Got Craft? (That’s right, as you read this I’m in Utah volunteering at an animal shelter and visiting the beautiful canyons. I miss you, though.)

Fire up your calendar and get craft-fair planning after the jump. …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>

The Proof – Trevor Phillips

November 30, 2010

Trevor Phillips is a B.C. born and raised artist, and is the creative force behind newly formed local clothing company Ebon Aves Apparel. He has been drawing and creating since he was old enough to hold a pencil.
His work ranges from one of a kind canvases to eye catching event posters. T-shirt design has always been Trevor’s passion, and he finally made the leap into the fashion world when Ebon Aves arrived on the scene in early 2010.
Many of his designs are inspired by nature, and the complex relationships inherent between man, beast, and the environment. He designs and prints all of Ebon Aves shirts himself, applying his eye for detail and demand for quality to each piece he creates. The end product is a unique piece of artwork you can wear.

Trevor Phillips Proof

The Proof

01 My first window display with my first run of t-shirts.
02 Goofing around in some more t-shirts that I’ve printed.
03 Sasquatch of Osoyoos.
04 Bullfrog wooing lady frogs at Queen Elizabeth Park.
05 Where all the t-shirt magic happens, in my lair.
06 Inspiration comes in all forms, I enjoy a little bit of everything.
07 One of my favourite paintings I’ve done, “so go get your knife, now kiss me!”
08 Shhhh.

The Questions
What neighborhood do you live in?
I live on the southern part of northern Main St. around Queen Elizabeth Park.

What do you do and where?
I work at an embroidery shop on Oak St. I’m the main production imprint specialist, working with screen printing, embroidering, digital garment printing, and heat pressed vinyl.

What are you working on?

I am always working on designs and ideas. Right now, I am involved with my clothing line, the occasional painting, and making a raven mask for my wedding.

Where can we find your work?
At the moment you can find my shirts exclusively at Lut Boutique on Main St., with future plans of expanding to other stores locally, then internationally. You can check out my t-shirt designs here, and my paintings and posters here.

Scene and Heard: Last Week In Music Vol. 32 ft. Maurice, Treelines, Will Currie & The Country French, Henry & The Nightcrawlers

November 30, 2010
sceneandheard
SCENE AND HEARD showcases the independent music scene here in
Vancouver.

We interview some of our favourite local artists, post weekly guest playlists comprised of Vancouver artists and ‘Last Week in
Music’ highlights some of the concerts happening around the city…

There were two release party shows in the city this week…Maurice had their EP release at The Railway with Will Currie and the Country French, and Treelines on Thursday. Henry & The Nightcrawlers’ full length was released at the Billy Bishop Legion with David Vertesi, and Zach Gray (regrettably I missed Dave and Zach’s sets, but caught Henry’s).
Both were excellent shows filled with talented musicians!

THIS WEEK IN MUSIC: This week marks the beginning of a VERY busy December for shows in Vancouver, and what better way to start it off than the FaderMaster Mo’ Off tonight at the Biltmore?! If ‘staches aren’t your thing, there is also the Green Couch Session Party at the Media Club. Wednesday MAKE SURE TO CHECK OUT OUR JOINT ISSUE WITH DISCORDER!!! Which you can convenietly find at the Biltmore when you go to see Talent Time! Thursday you must go to Girls Girls Girls…trust me. Friday is the CBC Open House...basically spend the entire day there seeing awesome things, and then head to…you guessed it, the Biltmore, for the Mint Records Ridiculously Early Xmas Party. Think the week is over yet? Nope! But Saturday you can relax in one of two coffee shops! Adrienne Pierce is up from California and playing at Trees, OR go see Steph Macpherson, Rolla Olak, Behind Sapphire, and Bob Kemmis at Waves on Howe. Happy December!

16 days with the 12×12 Photo Marathon 2010
DAY 13: 12X12 WINNER FOR THEME 09 VAGUE – MARATHONER #52 MARTIN CHUNG

November 30, 2010

For 12 hours on a cold and rainy September Sunday, 60 resilient photographers braved the elements to capture their interpretations of 12 randomly drawn themes with only 12 exposures of 35mm film. The rolls have been developed and judged and in Part 13 of 16 presenting the results of the 2nd annual 12×12 Vancouver Photo Marathon is Marathoner #52’s winning photo for Theme #09: Vague.

“I love this concept and composition,” remarked 12×12 judge Erin Cebula of Martin Chung’s interpretation for Vague. Despite the obvious ambiguity of the message conveyed in this photo, it was very clear to all the judges that this shot best captured the theme presented. The creativity of the photographer and the risk taken certainly made this image stand out from the rest.
