Welcome to The Playground, a place for Vancouver families. Every Wednesday I post a roundup of upcoming family-friendly events and activities. I’m always on the lookout for fun stuff to do, so if there’s something happening that you think I should know about, contact me.

In The Playground for the week of November 3-9: gardening at the Museum of Vancouver, authors at Kidsbooks, Bash the Trash, The Sound of Music and an open mic night.

As your kids approach the end of their Halloween loot, now would be a good time to teach them about healthier food options and the Museum of Vancouver has stepped up to provide a fun way of doing it. This Saturday the MOV Food Family Workshops kick off with Sprouting and Lasagna Gardening:

Sprouting: “You can grow food to eat in less than a week! Children will create their own sprouting jars and learn to grow food inside during winter.” 10AM-12AM

Lasagna Gardening and Bug ID: “No not spaghetti sauce and pasta! We will learn what ingredients you can find in your neighborhood to make a layered lasagna garden. You will each get a chance to make your own mini-lasagna garden to take home.” 1PM-3PM

A family can attend 1 workshop for $20 or attend both for $30. Admission includes access to the Museum. Space is limited so register early: 604-736-4431 and press 0.

For the bookworms out there, Kidsbooks has a couple of events lined up this week. Annie Barrows, author the Ivy & Bean series will be at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Gym on Thursday at 7PM. Tickets are $5. On Saturday, Jill Barber will be at Kidsbooks performing her lullaby Lay Down, which is now available as a board book. Things get underway at 10:30AM.

On Sunday at 11AM, the Vancouver Recital Society is hosting the New York-based musicians Bash the Trash. The concert/workshop is intended for kids aged 3-6. Using recycled materials, “audience members will be able to build their own musical instruments and join the Bash the Trash band in a rousing musical story”. The event takes place at Sunset Community Centre, tickets are 9$ for kids/$16 for adults and can be purchased by calling 604-602-0363.

Speaking of music, the Footlight Theatre Company is presenting The Sound of Music at the Michael J. Fox Theatre in Burnaby. There are ten shows running from Nov. 5-20 and tickets can be purchased at Tickets Tonight.

Lastly, this Friday from 5-7PM, Salt Spring Coffee on Main St. is kicking off a new, family-friendly open mic night. Cayley Western, the creator, says “we're hoping to maybe have parents bring kids in to perform as well as the usual young scruffsters with guitars”. Sound like a lot of fun to me. You can RSVP via their Facebook event listing.

Here’s your map. Have a great week.
