Welcome to The Playground, a place for Vancouver families. Every Wednesday I post a roundup of upcoming family-friendly events and activities. I’m always on the lookout for fun stuff to do, so if there’s something happening that you think I should know about, contact me.

In The Playground for the week of November 24-30: the Eastside Culture Crawl, Family FUSE Weekend, a performance workshop and the start of Vancouver's holiday festivities.

The big event going down this weekend is the Eastside Culture Crawl and although your average person might not think of it as a family friendly event, our son has enjoyed exploring the Parker Street Studios in the past, so why not give it a go.

With 394 artists at multiple venues over three days, you might want to consult the website to come up with a game plan.

Continuing with the art theme, it's also Family FUSE Weekend at the Vancouver Art Gallery. "Family FUSE is offering an action-packed line-up of performances and interactive activities especially for families on the theme of The Everyday." Family FUSE is on Saturday and Sunday from 10AM—5PM.

Also downtown is Clowning Around with Dianna David, a free workshop put on by ArtStarts. "Join Dianna, as she shows you how to juggle, hip-hop dance, mime and clown your way into creatively expressing who you are." There are two workshops on Saturday at 11Am and 1PM and pre-registration is not required.

It's still November, but a variety of Christmas events get underway this week. Tomorrow night is the Lighting of the Douglas Park Tree. "Make your own lantern, enjoy some hot cocoa and then carry your lamp through the labyrinth for the tree lighting celebration." The event takes place from 5:30&mdash7PM and is $8/family or $4/person.

Friday is the opening night of Bright Nights in Stanley Park, the park's 13th annual holiday celebration. 2 million lights, animated displays, the train ride... your kids will love it. Admission to the plaza is free, but you'll need to purchase tickets to ride the train or visit the Children's Farmyard. Also, don't forget to bring some money to donate to the British Columbia Professional Fire Fighters' Burn Fund.

This is also the opening weekend for The Peak of Christmas on Grouse Mountain. Families can check out Santa's Workshop, go skating, take in a sleigh ride and meet reindeer. The mountain has 2ft of snow at the moment an will probably get more tonight, so dress appropriately.

Here’s your map for the week.

As a final note, a family in our city experienced a frightening event the other evening and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. My heart goes out to them.
