16 days with the 12×12 Photo Marathon 2010
DAY 10: 12X12 WINNER FOR THEME 06 SECRET WORLD – MARATHONER #40 MATTHEW SINCLAIR

November 27, 2010

For 12 hours on a cold and rainy September Sunday, 60 resilient photographers braved the elements to capture their interpretations of 12 randomly drawn themes with only 12 exposures of 35mm film. The rolls have been developed and judged and in Part 10 of 16 presenting the results of the 2nd annual 12×12 Vancouver Photo Marathon is Marathoner #40’s winning photo for Theme #06: Secret World.

“There’s something very post-apocalyptic about this shot,” said 12×12 judges Adam & Kev. “It’s very dark…it has a lonely feel to it, and gives us a glimpse into a forgotten place and time.” As fellow 12×12 judge Erin Cebula puts it, it’s this “wonderfully disturbing” quality that earned Matthew Sinclair a second award for this very photo.

The annual 12×12 Vancouver Photo Marathon is a not-for-profit community-building initiative that celebrates the art of film photography. For more information, visit www.VancouverPhotoMarathon.com

Hot Hot Heat’s YVR

November 26, 2010

Have you seen this Hot Hot Heat video directed by Kheaven Lewandowski for their song YVR that came out a couple days ago? It was shot in the infamous Peanut Gallery on Richards/Pender. See anybody you know in there? Also, how many music videos do you see for songs that are 2 minutes 9 seconds long? Not many. I like it. Take a couple minutes out of your day and enjoy…

The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #13

November 26, 2010
Skateboard culture is deeply rooted in this fine city of ours. Not only does Metro Vancouver produce some of the world’s finest wood-wheelers, it’s also a major migratory destination for skaters from all over Canada. The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

“Film Fatties 2″, a locally produced skate vid, is silver-screen premiering downtown at the Granville 7 Cinemas tomorrow at 8pm with an afterparty at the Waldorf. Clicking right here will bring you to all the fine details.

In other local skate-event news, Commercial Drive’s BLVD skateshop is celebrating its 2-year anniversary in style at The Astoria tonight. Mini-ramp in the bar? Wet T-shirt contest? All that and more. Details here.

As for hot video links, Canadian board brand Redstar posted a video of their summertime Ontario tour featuring ‘Couver’s Paul Trep, Paul Machnau, and Chad Dickson. Bones Wheels put out a teaser for their January 2011 video, The Bönes Video, which includes hometown bros Jordan Hoffart and Ryan Decenzo.

Veteran pro and Vancouverite Gailea Momolu took the time to chat about his skate-career and what he’s up to now in this interview. Local ripper Adam Hopkins decided to take a long-ass Greyhound trip all around the US for 2 months. Clicking here and here will update you on his travels.

As the ender, North Van’s Sascha Daley is officially an AM on Mystery skateboards. This “welcome” part is insane (watch it full-screen):

UNPLUGGED Flickr Pick: tri-falls

November 26, 2010
UNPLUGGED is a state of mind.

It’s that point in your consciousness where you can feel at one with nature, escaping the trappings of the day-to-day to an almost dream-like place where nothing else seems to exist besides you and your natural surroundings. It is our opinion here at VIA that Vancouver holds a unique place in the civilized world in that reaching this state often requires no more effort than simply pulling off to the side of the road, pocketing your keys and taking a few steps into the forest.

This week’s UNPLUGGED Flickr Pick,  tri-falls taken in the Lynn Headwaters Regional Park by Chris Gehlen, exemplifies that fact, providing proof positive that if there is a heaven it most certainly contains real estate from the Lower Mainland.

If you want to see your outdoor photo’s featured at VIA don’t forget to submit them to our V.I.A. UNPLUGGED Flickr pool.
